GAITER WEEKLY 17: Hoops split with Concordia highlights Gaiter weekend

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:

Jessy Roy is the Bishop's University Athlete of the Week for the week ending January 29, 2012, earning the nod for the second straight week. The fifth-year point guard from Val d'Or, Que., was dominant in the Gaiters’ 59-55 win over then-league-leading Concordia on Friday night. The former Cégep de Sherbrooke Volontaire scored 12 points, and had team highs with eight rebounds, seven assists and four steals. Roy continues to lead the conference in several categories, including assists (5.0 per game), steals (3.0 per game), minutes played (34.2 per game) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.5). She is currently seventh in the CIS in assists, and 5th in the country in minutes played per game.

 

HONOUR ROLL:

  • Tim Hunter, Men's Basketball – 17 points and eight rebounds on Friday night vs. Concordia
  • Taylor Wade, Women's Hockey – Scored seven points (5G, 2A) in four games last weekend
  • Mukiya Post, Men's Basketball – Scored 18 points, including 10 free throws, on Friday
  • Véronique Fortin-Tremblay, Women's Basketball – Gaiters' high scorer with 13 points
  • Sean Monplaisir, Men's Basketball – 14 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists on Friday night.
  • Katie Ramm, Women's Hockey – Scored seven points (2G, 5A) in four games last weekend.
  • Catherine Bélanger-Pâquet, Women's Basketball – Led Gaiters with seven defensive rebounds.
  • Emiliee Walker, Women's Hockey – Netted two goals and an assist last weekend.

Gaiters lead the Stingers to Victory

 

FRIDAY – Gaiters 59, Concordia 55

A strong all-around performance by Jessy Roy led the Bishop's Gaiters to a 59-55 victory over the league-leading Concordia Stingers in Quebec university women's basketball league play at the Mitchell Gym, Friday night. The fifth-year point guard scored 12 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and made a team-high seven assists and four steals, as she led the Gaiters to their third consecutive victory.

Gaiters comeback falls short in loss to Concordia

 

FRIDAY – Concordia 75, Gaiters 67
The Bishop's Gaiters mounted a late charge, but it was not enough to overhaul then-No. 8 Concordia as they fell, 75-67 at the Mitchell Gym, Friday night. The Gaiters trailed by as many as 21 points in the first half, but cut the gap to as few as three late in the game before Concordia pulled away in the final minute.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters return to action on Friday, February 3, as they host the McGill Redmen. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.

 

WOMEN’S HOCKEY (3-7-3, 3-3-2 MWIHC)

Polar Bears go winless at Burlington prep school tournament

 

The Bishop's Polar Bears went 0-3-1 last weekend in Burlington, Vt., as they played four games against schools in the North American Prep Hockey Association. The Bears' weekend highlighted by a thrilling four-goal comeback to force a tie in their final game.

 

FRIDAY – Rice 6, Polar Bears 1

After a longer-than-expected trip into the U.S., the Polar Bears suffered a 6-1 defeat at the hands of the host Rice Knights. Taylor Wade got the Bears on the board at 6:29 of the first, but Rice responded 30 seconds later with the first of three goals for Alica Mihalikova. The Knights led 2-1 after the first and pulled away with four second-period goals. Also scoring for the Knights was Freddie Lalonde, Gretchen Tarrant and McKenna Hayes. Bianca Letarte took the loss in net for the Bears.

 

SATURDAY –Northwood 4, Polar Bears 1

Two goals in each of the first two periods led Northwood Prep to a 4-1 win over the Bears on Saturday morning. Northwood got goals from four different scorers (Erin Brand, Jessica Brennan, Francesca Paciello and Casey Kilduff) as they prevailed in a physical game. Emilee Walker replied for the Bears, while Katie Booth suffered the loss in net.

 

SATURDAY – Stanstead 4, Polar Bears 2

A hat trick by Sara Lefort led the Stanstead College Spartans to a 4-2 win over the Polar Bears. Lefort scored the only goal in the first period, and a pair of in the third for Stanstead, who led 1-0 after the first and 2-0 after the second. Taylor Wade replied for Bishop's with a pair of third-period goals, with Katie Ramm assisting on both. Abigale Vanlwender had the other Stanstead goal.

 

SUNDAY – Polar Bears 5, Rothesay Northwood School 5

An incredible five-goal third period gave the Polar Bears a 5-5 tie against the RNS Riverhawks on Sunday morning, in their final game of the weekend. The Bears trailed 4-0 after the second period, and 5-1 at the 8:32 mark of the third, but Bishop's roared back with three goals in 96 seconds to pull to within one, while Taylor Wade's game-tying goal at 12:02 gave Bishop's a share of the spoils. Wade scored twice for the Bears. Katie Ramm scored two within 25 seconds during the Polar Bear comeback, while Emille Walker had the other Bishop's counter. Katie Booth picked up the tie for Bishop's.

 

UP NEXT: The Polar Bears are off this week. Their annual alumni weekend is set for Saturday, Feb. 18.
