LENNOXVILLE, Que. – The Bishop's Gaiters basketball teams both have a single game this weekend, at home to the Concordia Stingers on Friday night. The women's game tips off at 6 p.m., while the men's game follows at 8 p.m. Both games will be webcast on SSN Canada (www.ssncanada.ca) with live stats available at http://livestats.prestosports.com/bishops. Tickets for Friday's doubleheader are $8 for adults, and are available at the door.
(N.B. The men's start time is 8 p.m. Some earlier materials had the game incorrectly listed as a 4 p.m. start.)
Alex Perno's women's squad (9-12 overall, 9-11 CIS, 4-4 Quebec) is coming off a pair of big wins last week, over UQAM and Laval, and moved into third place in the Quebec conference. Concordia, Friday night's visitor, currently sits atop the league with a 6-1 record (11-8 overall & CIS).
The Gaiters were led last weekend by Jessy Roy, who averaged 17 points and six assists. Roy is eighth in the CIS, and leads Quebec, with 4.7 assists per game. She also leads the league in steals (2.9/game), free-throw percentage (0.840) and minutes (34.1/game). Also standing out for the Gaiters last weekend were sophomores Catherine Bélanger-Pâquet, who had her second double-double of the season on Friday night, and Riley Shkimba, who scored a career-high 16 points on Saturday.
Concordia, who suffered their first regular-season loss last week, is led by Kaylah Barrett. She is third in the country with 20.6 points per game.
This will be the second matchup of the season between the Stingers and the Gaiters. Concordia won the first contest, 59-56, in Montreal behind 17 points from Barrett. Gabrielle Chamberland led the Gaiters in that game with 16 points, and she will be looking to rebound from a relatively quiet weekend.
On the men's side, the Gaiters (6-15, 6-11 CIS, 1-7 Quebec) will look to build on the momentum of their big comeback win last Saturday over Laval as they overcame a 17-point deficit to pick up their first home win of the season. Their task does not get any easier, as the No. 9-ranked Concordia Stingers visit the Mitchell Gym. The Stingers are 15-7 overall (14-4 vs. CIS), but 7-0 in league play.
Last weekend, the Gaiters were led by Tim Hunter, who averaged 18 points over two games, and Onnex Blackwood, who scored 12 second-half points in the Gaiters' win. Mike Andrews also stood out with a double-double on Saturday. Hunter is currently fourth on the league scoring table (14.3 ppg), while Blackwood is tied for ninth (11.9 ppg). Andrews is second in the CIS with 1.8 blocked shots per game, behind only Balraj Bains of UBC (2.0/game).
The Stingers led by Evens Laroche and Kyle Desmarais, who are 1-2 in the league in scoring, with 15.0 and 14.9 ppg, respectively.
Concordia won the first matchup between the teams, 71-59, in Montreal in November. Laroche led the Stingers with 17 points, while Desmarais added 14. Bishop's got 20 points from newcomer Mukiya Post.
