SHERBROOKE, Que. - A three-pointer by Chris Spurrell with 14 seconds left lifted the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds to a 95-90 win over the Bishop's Gaiters in non-conference men's basketball action at the Mitchell Gym in Lennoxville, Saturday. Spurrell connected from beyond the arc to put UNB up 92-90, and the V-Reds made three free throws to close the game out.
UNB (15-3, 7-1 AUS) was led by Ibrahima Dombouya, who scored 28 points on 9-for-19 shooting, while Tyrell Leotaud added 20 points as he went 8-for-12 from the field. Spurrell, for his part, finished with 14 points, including the decisive triple, and a team-high six rebounds, while Cooper Walks added 10 points.
Bishop's (1-14, 1-4 RSEQ) had five players in double figures, let by
Abdul Kamane (Montreal, Que./Vanier College) and Joany Castor-Thadal, who each had 18 points. Veteran
David Belanger (Sherbrooke, Que./Champlain-St. Lambert) and new arrival Nervens Demosthenes each scored 16, while
Kevin Davis (Baltimore, Md./Digital Harbor H.S.) came off the bench to score 11.
The game featured six ties and six lead changes. Bishop's led 22-16 after the first quarter and 42-41 at halftime, but UNB held a 70-62 lead after the third quarter.
The Gaiters are back in action on Friday, Jan. 5, 2018, as they visit the Laval Rouge et Or in Quebec City. Tip-off at the PEPS is set for 8 p.m.
