MONTREAL – Double-doubles by Kaylah Barrett and Tina Mpondani led the Concordia Stingers to a come-from-behind victory, 65-53, over the Bishop's Gaiters in a Quebec university basketball semi-final at the Concordia Gym in Montreal, Tuesday night. Barrett, who was named the league's most valuable player on Monday, scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, while Mpondani scored 15 and had 12 boards. The Gaiters (12-18, 12-16 CIS, 7-9 Quebec) got ten points each from Gabrielle Chamberland (Sherbrooke, Que.), Véronique Fortin-Tremblay (Chicoutimi, Que.) and Riley Shkimba (Kingston, Ont.). Catherine Bélanger-Pâquet (Quebec City, Que.) had a team-high eight rebounds, along with eight points.

TODAY’S GAME: The third-seeded Bishop’s Gaiters open the playoffs with a visit to the No. 2-seed Concordia Stingers in Montreal. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: The Bishop's Gaiters Athlete of the Week is Gabrielle Chamberland of the women's basketball team. The second-year swingman from Sherbrooke scored 32 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in two games last weekend, leading the Gaiters on both nights. On Thursday, at McGill, she led the Gaiters with 18 points, including four three-pointers, and matched her season high with eight rebounds. On Friday night, she scored 14 points and made three assists, equalling her season high.

MONTREAL – A 23-point first quarter paced the McGill Martlets to a 69-44 victory over the Bishop's Gaiters in Quebec university women's basketball action at the Love Competition Hall, Thursday night. The Martlets led 23-14 after the first quarter, and never trailed from that point on, as they improved to 11-4 in league play (15-11 overall, 15-10 vs. CIS). With the win, McGill clinches the conference regular-season pennant, and at least a berth in the CIS Regionals.
LENNOXVILLE, Que. – The Bishop's Gaiters basketball teams close out the regular season this weekend with a pair of games, as they travel to McGill on Thursday before returning home to play Laval on Friday. Both doubleheaders will be webcast on SSN Canada (www.ssncanada.ca), and Friday's games will have live stats available at http://livestats.prestosports.com/bishops. On both days, the women’s game tips off at 6 p.m., with the men following at 8 p.m.
More...ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: The Bishop's Gaiters Athlete of the Week is Mike Andrews of the Men's Basketball team. The second-year centre scored 25 points last weekend and tied for the team lead with 14 rebounds in the Gaiters' two games. On Friday, he set a new career high with six blocked shots, while adding eight points and seven rebounds. On Sunday, he scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds, highlighted by a monster dunk in the second quarter that put Bishop's up by 12. Andrews is currently the leading shot blocker in the CIS, with 2.1 per game.

More...QUEBEC CITY – A three-pointer by Marjorie Ferland with 40 seconds left gave the Laval Rouge et Or a come-from-behind victory, 58-54, over the Bishop's Gaiters in CIS women's basketball action at the PEPS gymnasium on Sunday afternoon. Ferland's trey capped a 24-point fourth quarter for the hosts, who overcame a 40-34 third-quarter deficit to pull into a tie for third place in the Quebec conference with the Gaiters.
