SHERBROOKE, Que. – The nation's third ranked team, the McGill Martlets proved twice this weekend they are one of the best university basketball teams in the CIS. They topped the winless Bishop's Gaiters 85-30 on Thursday in Montreal and backed that up with a 67-50 win to spoil the Gaiters home opener in Lennoxville on Saturday.
Bishop's had yet to play a contest on their campus prior to January 10 due to Mitchell Gym and the John H. Price Sports Centre Renovation. The facility was not finished for the game therefore the game was moved to the gym on the new side of the Bishop's sports centre.
Following a dominating McGill performance on Thursday night, Bishop's came out determined to earn their first victory of the season. The Gaiters held the dangerous Martlets in check early on; the score was knotted at 11 after the first quarter. McGill pulled away in the middle two stanzas, outscoring the hosts 43-22 in the second and third frames. A late push by Bishop's in the fourth quarter was not enough, as the Martlets remained perfect at 6-0 with a 76-50 victory.
Leading the way for the Gaiters was Naomi Zitt-James (Ajax, Ont.). She netted 14 points on 6-for-11 shooting in 27 minutes on Saturday. Noemie Hamelp-Petit (Magog, Que.) scored 12 points in her home debut.
The Gaiters improved from their 21 percent shooting on Thursday night to just under 38 percent form the floor on Saturday. McGill was dominant rebounding in both contests. They grabbed 27 more boards on Thursday and were plus 22 on the glass on Saturday.
Bishop's (0-6) is back in action again on Thursday, January 15 in Montreal against the Concordia Stingers (1-3) at 6 p.m. They will play the back end of a home-and-home double-header on Saturday, Jan. 17 at Bishop's also tipping off at 6 p.m.
