The Bishop's Gaiters women's basketball team won the Helen Campbell Tournament in Fredericton on Sunday, after they swept through the three-day event with a 3-0 record.
On Friday, they downed the hosts UNB 75-53. They followed that up with a 53-45 win over Dalhousie on Saturday, and closed out their perfect weekend with a 72-53 win over Lakehead on Sunday morning.
Edith Noblecilla (Guayaquil, Ecuador) was named Tournament MVP, while she and
Ashley Milhomme (Repentigny, Que.) were named to the tournament all-star team.
"I was extremely pleased with our performance," said Gaiters head coach
Craig Norman, who picked up his first three wins in purple. "The girls were focused and determined throughout the tournament. We played well defensively and were explosive in spurts on the offensive end. We did not shoot the ball well but we made up for that on the defensive end."
On Friday, the Gaiters pulled away in the second half, as they defeated the host UNB Varsity Reds, 75-53. Bishop's led 37-30 at halftime, stretched their lead to 11 points at 54-43 after 30 minutes and shut the Varsity Reds down in the fourth quarter, holding them to just 10 points.
Noblecilla led all scorers with 23 points on 9-for-17 shooting. Milhomme added 11 points while
Noemie Hamel-Petit (Magog, Que.) chipped in with 14 and a team-high six rebounds. Laura Kaye was the only Varsity Red in double figures, with 20 points. The Gaiters shot 38.5% from the field, to 35% for UNB. Bishop's played strong defensively, forcing 33 UNB turnovers and making 19 steals. Noblecilla had 10 steals to complete a rare double-double.
On Saturday, the Gaiters held off a second-half comeback by the Dalhousie Tigers to pick up the 53-45 victory in a tight, defensive struggle. The Gaiters led 29-19 at halftime, but the TIgers came back to tie the game 35-35 after the third quarter. Bishop's again had a strong fourth quarter, holding Dal to just 10 points.
The Gaiters were in double figures, led by Milhomme, who had 15 points. Noblecilla had 12 points and Hamel-Petit added 10.
Mara Marchizotti (Buenos Aires, Argentina) led Bishop's with seven rebounds, while Noblecilla and Hamel-Petit had six each. Marchizotti also blockd three shots.
On Sunday, the Gaiters completed the perfect weekend with a 72-52 victory over Lakehead. The Gaiters came out strong, scoring 28 points in the first quarter, and never trailing from that point on.
Rookie guard Maeve Dinalle led the Gaiters with 15 points. The Parisian went 5-for-12 from the field and made all four of her field goals. Also in double figures for the Gaiters were Noblecilla (12 points), Milhomme (14) and Marchizotti (14 points). Marchizotti completed a conventional double-double as she grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds, including 10 on the defensive glass.
With the wins, the Gaiters are 3-0 on the year. Their next action is in two weeks, when they head to St. John's, N.L. for the Marie's Mini-Mart Fall Classic, where they will face Memorial, Nipissing and Brandon universities.
"We are eager to get back into practice and working on correcting some of our weaknesses and bulding on our strengths," the veteran bench boss added. "We look forward to our next tournament in St. John's."
