Noblecilla Leads Strong Senior Group past Stingers

SHERBROOKE, Que. - Fifth-year senior Edith Noblecilla (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Santo Domingo de Guzmain) was one rebound shy of a triple-double in her final regular season game in Mitchell Gym.  The floor general led the Bishop's Gaiters to a 62-57 win over the Concordia Stingers in RSEQ University women's basketball action on Friday.

Noblecilla finished with 13 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds as she and the Gaiters finished the year at 8-8 and dashed the Stingers playoff hopes.  Concordia fell to 4-11.

Fellow graduating senior Maeva Dinalle (Paris, France/) kept her best for last as she tallied 12 points that included a perfect 4-4 performance from behind the arc.  Mara Marchizotti (Buenos Aires, Argentina/) scored six points, hauled in eight rebounds and had three blocks.  Local product Noemie Hamel-Petit (Magog, Que./Champlain-Lennoxville) scored six on a pair of three pointers in the first half that gave Bishop's the momentum they never relinquished.

Freshman Marie-Evrardine Berrouette (Montreal, Que./Dawson College) had another strong performance on the boards. She pulled in 10 to go along with seven points, two steals and an assist.

Bishop's jumped out to a 18-9 lead in the first quarter, while Concordia fought for their playoff lives. The Gaiters could not put them away and Concordia answered back to cut the lead to 27-21 at the break.

The Gaiters kept threatening to run away but missed lay-ups and free throws allowed the Stingers to stay within striking distance.  Bishop's carried a 44-36 lead into the final frame and eventually held on for the 62-57 win.

Caroline Task led all scorers with 18 points while Coralie Dumont added 12 and Aurelie D'Anjou had 11 for the Stingers.

"Concordia is a good team," said Gaiters' head coach Craig Norman. "We wanted to win going into the playoffs, we considered this a playoff game. I think our added incentive tonight was for four graduating seniors and they played unbelievable. It's so fitting on senior night they stepped up and performed so well."

Next up Bishop's heads to McGill on Wednesday night to face the Martlets in an RSEQ semifinal.  Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.  In the other semifinal, Laval will host UQAM.

Friday night in Mitchell Gym also marked the Gaiters annual Shoot for the Cure Game.  They donned their pink uniforms as they, along with the support of the women's soccer team collected funds for Ruban Rose, the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation.
