MONTREAL –
Jael Kabunda (Montreal, Que./College Montmorency) continued the outstanding start to her first-year in RSEQ University Women's Basketball. She knocked down a three-pointer with two seconds remaining to propel the Bishop's Gaiters to a 50-48 victory over McGill on Saturday afternoon in Montreal.
Kabunda finished with 16 points and played all 40 minutes as the short-handed Gaiters improve to 4-1 and sit alone atop the RSEQ standing after the first semester. Bishop's played just seven players; the starting five each had 33 minutes of court time or more.
Super sophomore
Amaiquen Siciliano (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Velez Sarsfield) led all scorers with 21 points as she continues to lead the league in scoring. The Gaiters also got 35 minutes from first-year basketball player
Sabrina Kone (Hawkesbury, Ont./) who replaced injured
Marie Berrouette (Montreal, Que./Dawson College) in the line-up. Kone had four points and nine rebounds.
Bishop's ended the game just 2-21 from behind the arc, none bigger than Kabunda's dagger in the final seconds. McGill was only 4-16 from long range.
No Martlet scored in double figures while veterans Gladys Hakizimana and GG Cabillo-Abante fouled out down the stretch.
Next up, Bishop's will host a holiday tournament between Christmas and New Years before returning to RSEQ action on Thursday, Jan. 16 when Laval is in town.
