OTTAWA, Ont. - After a one year delay, the Gaiters made their much anticipated return to the ice for their inaugural U SPORTS season in a match-up with the Carleton Ravens.
Carleton controlled the game early and got on the board five minutes into the opening period on a goal from Stephanie Chouchani. Bishop's upped the tempo and had several opportunities to even the score but were unable to find the back of the net after 20 minutes.
Bishop's started the second period strong, getting on the scoreboard for the first time as a U SPORTS team, less than one minute into the second stanza. Chloe Hawes (Stratford, PEI/The Mount Academy) set up Catherine Berger-Dubé who fired the puck past the Carleton goalie from the point on the power play. Six minutes later, Emily Smythe regained the one goal lead for the home team.
Both teams came into the third period set to get the victory and increased their energy levels and physicality. Ultimately, the third period was goalless until the Ravens put away an empty netter in the final two minutes of the game to make the final score 3-1.
Charley Wing (Huntsville, Ont./Mother Teresa C.S.S.) faced 31 shots and made 29 saves on the night during her 58 minutes on the ice.
The Gaiters had twenty-eight shots on goal to the Ravens' thirty-two. With the result, the Gaiters start the season 0-1 while the Ravens go 1-0 to open the 2021 campaign.
Gaiters Head Coach, Dominic Desmarais, was excited for the team to get back on the ice after the COVID-19 delay and is looking forward to Sunday's home opener in front of #GaiterNation:
