MONTREAL, Que. - The Gaiters women's hockey team competed against the Montreal Carabins three weeks ago on Halloween Sunday in the 2021 home opener. This Friday night, the two teams met once again and the Gaiters defeated the Montreal Carabins, this time on the road, by a score of 2-1 to take a 2-0 series lead this season.
The Gaiters came out of the gates strong and controlled much of the possession early on.
Jamie Aspropotamitis (Richmond, Ont., Sacred Heart H.S.) scored the opener twelve minutes into the first period of play on the power play.
Maude Pépin (Pont-Rouge, Que., Cegep Limoilou) and
Noémie Garneau (Quebec City, Que., Cegep Limoilou) recorded the assists. Bishop's outshot Montreal 9-7 after the opening 20 minutes of play and remained ahead by one to close out the period.
The Carabins evened things in the second period and tied things up midway through the period but the purple and white kept competing. The Gaiters moved the puck well out of the zone, stuck to the game plan and created scoring opportunities.
Maude Pépin (Pont-Rouge, Que., Cegep Limoilou) fore checked hard and was rewarded when her top-shelf shot found its way past the Montreal goaltender to retake the lead in the closing minutes of the second stanza.
Both teams continued to push in the third but neither was able to add to their total. The Gaiters got the win with a 2-1 final. Bishop's played a full 60 minutes at every position which pushed the visitors to a victory. Gaiters head coach,
Dominic Desmarais, was impressed with the Gaiters' ability to control the neutral zone and maintain high intensity throughout the duration of the game.
Goaltender,
Aglaé René de Cotret (Rouyn-Noranda, Que., Champlain-Lennoxville), recorded 30 saves for the Gaiters in the win.
The win improves the Gaiters to 3-4 and moves the purple and white into a three-way tie for third place.
