After defeating Laval 67-61 in the first game of the season, the Gaiters women's basketball team dropped a 71-60 decision to the Concordia Stingers last Thursday night in the first road game of the young RSEQ season. The Gaiters returned to Montreal on Saturday and put on an impressive performance in Montreal for an 80-47 victory over the McGill Martlets.
UQAM has played two games thus far this season and holds a 1-1 record. Last Thursday, the Citadins defeated the Martlets by a score of 79-38. In the first game of the 2021-22 season, UQAM dropped a 64-54 decision to Laval.
ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT
Victoria Gauna (Mendoza, Argentina/) of the Bishop's women's basketball team took home Provigo, Robert Lafond Athlete of the Week honours for her performance over the weekend.
A first-year forward from Mendoza, Argentina, Gauna was the Gaiters' leading scorer in both RSEQ contests this past weekend. In Thursday's match-up with Concordia, the rookie scored 18 points, had 7 rebounds and two assists. On Saturday at McGill, Gauna recorded the game's only double-double with an impressive 28-point performance and 12 rebounds in the Gaiters' 80-47 victory. She shot 11 of 18 from the field, 2 of 2 from 3-point range and made 4 of 7 free throws. She also added 2 assists and 2 steals.
