Martlets escape Gaiters on Sunday afternoon

LENNOXVILLE, Que. -  The #3 nationally-ranked McGill Martlets escaped Lennoxville with a 4-3 victory over the Bishop's Gaiters women's hockey team on Sunday afternoon at the Jane & Eric Molson Arena.

Marika Labrecque scored the game's opening goal 5:16 into the first period to give the Martlets a 1-0 lead headed into the first intermission.

The Gaiters tied things up 8:59 into the second stanza on a goal from Neleh Vigneau Sargeant (Dartmouth, N.S., Lockview H.S.), her first of the season. Jessica Bélanger (Sherbrooke, Que., Champlain-Lennoxville) and Noémie Thibault (Sherbrooke, Que., Champlain-Lennoxville) recorded the assists.
 
The final 20 minutes proved to be a scoring frenzy with five shots finding the back of the net. Emma Piers scored a short-handed goal early in the third period for the Martlets before Angélique Pagé (Ottawa, Ont., ) once again tied the game for the Gaiters, this time on the power play. Marie-Camille Théorêt (Magog, Que., Champlain-Lennoxville) and Neleh Vigneau Sargeant (Dartmouth, N.S., Lockview H.S.) got the assists.
 
McGill added two more goals, one from Laura Jardin and the other from Stephanie Desjardins, before Neleh Vigneau Sargeant (Dartmouth, N.S., Lockview H.S.) recorded her second goal of the game for Bishop's. Captain, Jessica Bélanger (Sherbrooke, Que., Champlain-Lennoxville), made the assist. Despite the final push by the purple and white, the Martlets escaped with a 4-3 win.
 
Netminder, Charley Wing (Huntsville, Ont./Mother Teresa C.S.S.), faced 42 shots and made 38 saves throughout the contest.

Neleh Vigneau Sargeant (Dartmouth, N.S./Lockview H.S.) was named the second star of the game while Charley Wing (Huntsville, Ont./Mother Teresa C.S.S.) received third star honours.

The loss drops the Gaiters to 3-7-0-0 on the season.

The Gaiters are back in action on Friday night in the nation's capital to face the Carleton Ravens at 7PM. Bishop's will return to Lennoxville for the final game of 2021 on Sunday December 5 to face the Montreal Carabins at home. Game is set for 3:30PM.
