After a one week delay, the RSEQ women's hockey bronze medal series got underway on Thursday night in Ottawa and it was the Gaiters who collected the win and will return to Lennoxville with a 1-0 series lead over the Ottawa Gee-Gees.
The Gaiters hit the road to face the Ottawa Gee-Gees in Game #1 of the series, looking to start this round of playoffs the same way they did in Round 1 and were able to do just that – dropping the Gee-Gees 4-0.
Despite some good opportunities for both teams in the opening 20 minutes of play, neither team was able to find the back of the net, leaving the Gaiters and Gee-Gees deadlocked headed into the first intermission.
Bishop's scored five minutes into the second period when an extended shift by the Gee-Gees allowed for an opening and
Noémie Garneau (Quebec City, Que., Cegep Limoilou) took full advantage, scoring her first goal of the playoffs and giving the Gaiters a 1-0 lead in the process.
Maude Pépin (Pont-Rouge, Que., Cegep Limoilou) and
Majorie Bolduc (Saint-Ephrem-de-Beauce, Que., Champlain-Lennoxville) picked up assists on the first Gaiters' goal of the contest.
The Gaiters doubled their lead at the 10 minute mark of the second frame on a goal from
Angélique Pagé (Ottawa, Ont., Laurentian Voyageurs), her second of the playoffs, to lead 2-0 after 40 minutes of play.
Jamie Aspropotamitis (Richmond, Ont., Sacred Heart H.S.) and
Jessica Bélanger (Sherbrooke, Que., Champlain-Lennoxville) earned helpers on the goal.
Coming out of the intermission, Bishop's continued to press and put the puck past the Gee-Gees goaltender for the third time.
Neleh Vigneau Sargeant (Dartmouth, N.S., Lockview H.S.) continued her hot streak in the playoffs, finding the back of the net for the Gaiters.
Majorie Bolduc (Saint-Ephrem-de-Beauce, Que., Champlain-Lennoxville) and
Gabrielle Rousseau (Sherbrooke, Que., Champlain-Lennoxville) drew the assists on the goal.
The Gaiters sealed their victory with an empty-netter from
Maude Pépin (Pont-Rouge, Que., Cegep Limoilou) with 1:29 left in the third to cement a 4-0 final.
This is the Gaiters first victory over the Gee-Gees this season.
Aglaé René de Cotret (Rouyn-Noranda, Que., Champlain-Lennoxville) turned away 38 shots for the win, while Bishop's tallied 25 of their own.
Rene de Cotret was named the 1
st Star of the Game for her performance between the pipes while
Maude Pepin received 2
nd Star honours for her goal and assist.
Noemie Garneau was named the 3
rd Star of the Game for the Gaiters.
