Gaiters grind out victory over Stingers on Saturday night

LENNOXVILLE, Que. – Marianne Boithias (Noirétable, FRA) was two assists shy of a triple-double as she helped will the Gaiters to a 73-67 victory over the Concordia Stingers on Saturday night in Lennoxville.

The Gaiters, who were without three starters and only had seven players available, found a way to get the job done and sweep the home-and-home series over the Stingers.

Bishop's jumped out to an early lead.  They scored 29 first quarter points and held a 43-25 advantage at the break. The Gaiters extended their lead to as much as 19 in the third before fatigue started to set in and Concordia made a run.

Led by Serena Tchida who scored 29 for the visitors and Rowena Blais who added 21, the Stingers slowly chipped away but were never able to take a lead.  Bishop's answered and in front of an excited Mitchell Gym crowd found another gear to close out the game with a 73-67 victory.

The win gives the Gaiters the upper hand on second place in the RSEQ at 8-6 while Concordia falls to 4-8 and have yet to win a game in 2024. Bishop's also holds tiebreakers over the three teams that trail them.

On Saturday Boithais' gutsy performance led the Gaiters.  She played 38 minutes, scored 15 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, dished out eight assists, had a steal and a block.  Jasmine Martel (Sorel-Tracy, QC/Cegep de Trois-Rivieres) scored 13, rookie Eve Atchampone (Trois-Rivieres, QC/CEGEP St-Jean) scored 12 and Jessica Vidovic (Surrey, B.C./Champlain-Lennoxville) added 10 including three first-quarter threes to help set the tone.

The Gaiters will now enjoy a bye week before they are back in action on Friday, Feb. 16 in Quebec City against the undefeated Laval Rouge et Or who have locked up first place in the conference.
