Gaiters results 2000-2011

Bishop's University Lacrosse (2006)

BU dominated the opposition outscoring the opposition 113-41 in 9 games

After a disappointing start to the 2005 season, the Gaiters looked much more prepared for a better start to the 2006 season. With only a few graduated players, head coach Damien Roy mentionned that "2006 will be the most mature and focused team Bishop’s will field in our 5 CUFLA seasons." The Gaiters regrouped and made a run for the Baggataway Cup again in 2006...coming empty handed for a 4th time...but what a season it was.

The team played quite a few exhibition games before and during the regular season: Bishop's defeated the Oshawa Blue Knights 11-8. It was their first win against Oshawa in three years. The team was also invited to their first American fall ball tournament hosted by Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh, PA. The Gaiters were able to play against four American colleges across the NCAA Division spectrum. Bishop’s played their first game against Carnegie Mellon University, a 9-1 win. The second of back to back games was against Div. III Seton Hill University. The score finished 4-3 Bishop’s. In their third game they came up short 6-5 against Div. II St. Vincent College. The final game was against the tournament hosts, Div. I Robert Morris University. An 8-3 RMU win. The team also played against the Senior Men’s Ross Cup Champions, the Coquitlam Beer Hunters (B.C.) at Optimist Field.

In regular season play, the team played all the teams in CUFLA once. One game came to mind because it has an interesting tidbit of information. On their first game of the season the Gaiters won 7-2 against the U of T. This win brought the Gaiters to 9-0 all time against the Varsity Blues. Eventually, the team finished the regular season with a perfect 9-0, they were ranked # 1 in CUFLA and they got a bye to the Baggataway Cup. In the semi-finals game the Gaiters narrowly beat Western 9-8. In the finals game, the Brock University Badgers captured their 5th Championship in a row by upsetting the # 1 ranked Bishop’s University Gaiters by a score of 11-8 at St Michael's College School in Toronto. Bishop's missed a big player the whole year as Chris Lesanko couldn't play due to an injury. The players got together and paid to fly Chris in to the tournament. What a great gesture on their part. Chris we salute you.

Andrew Barber (43 points) and Jimmy Southall (42 points) finished the season ranked first and second respectively in the league in scoring.

On a personal note let's not forget the followings: The Chicago Shamrox selected Jackson Gair in the NLL Draft. Gair became the 2nd Gaiter to be selected in the NLL. At the end of 2006 National Lacrosse League entry draft, Nick Inch, from Kitchener, Ont., a member of the Bishop's Gaiters Lacrosse team, was traded to the Minnesota Swarm by the Toronto Rock. In 2005, Inch had been the first player from Bishop's to be selected in the NLL.

Damien Roy was the head coach that year, Rob Engelken, Paul Lehmann & Martin Charland were his assistants.

Nick Inch, Colin Bloom & Matt Glass were the captains.

The 2006 squad consisted of (I hope I didn't miss anybody):

Bishop's had to wait another 5 years (2011) to put its hands for the first time on the coveted trophy.

Bishop's University Lacrosse (2004)
Baggataway Cup played in Lennoxville. Gaiters in the finals for 3rd straight year.

We are now in 2004. Since its inception a few years ago (2000), the Gaiters quickly developed a university lacrosse powerhouse and in their first two official years playing in the Ontario league (2002, 2003) they came very close to winning the Baggataway twice. 2004 proved to be more of the same. They couldn't put their hands on the coveted trophy playing in front of their fans.

In 2004, OUFLA became CUFLA - Founded in 1985, CUFLA was originally known as the Ontario University Field Lacrosse Association (OUFLA) and, as the name suggests, was entirely Ontario based. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, OUFLA expanded to include more teams across Ontario. In 2004, OUFLA changed its name to the Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association to reflect the additions of McGill University and Bishop’s University, both of which are in Quebec. This change also allowed for the continued growth of CUFLA and Men's Field Lacrosse across Canada.

2004 was a repeat of 2002 & 2003. The team went 8-0 on the season. The Gaiters won the East Conference title again and got a first round bye to the Baggataway Cup. In the semi-finals game Bishop's beat the University of Toronto 15-2 but lost 10-9 to their eternal western rival Brock in a dramatic game which saw Bishop's All-Canadian and CUFLA leading scorer Jimmy Southall finish with four goals and All-Canadian Chris Lesanko contribute with three goals while All-Canadian Ryan Scott registered three assists.

Carleton beat Western 2-0 on Optimist Field in a blizzard on Friday night which destroyed the field. Guelph had lost to Toronto in the afternoon on the Arena Field. On Saturday Bishop's beat Toronto on the field behind Coulter and Brock beat Carleton at Forbes Field at McGill. The finals (Bishop's vs Brock) was actually played behind Coulter as Optimist was literally destroyed.

It is also noteworthy to talk a bit about the calibre of players on both sides that year as well. Brock had some notable players on their team at the time. Delby Powless, who received an honourable mention as an All-American at Rutgers played for Brock and turned pro in 2005 along with Jon Sullivan who also turned pro in 2005 and went on to play for Team Canada and Sandy Chapman who turned pro in 2002 and played for the Toronto Rock in 2012.

The quality of the players on the two teams that year was extremely high not just some of the best players in Canada but some of the best in the world.

Attackman Chris Lesanko was BU Men's Athlete of the year (this was the first time a lacrosse player won the prestigious award). The voting for the award was completed 3 days before Chris was injured. Lesanko was also named BU Men's lacrosse MVP of the year. Jimmy Southall was named Rookie of the year and Brennan Durovick was chosen Defensive player of the year.

Damien Roy was the head coach while Rob Engelken & Paul Lehmann assisted him.

Ryan Scott was a captain that year.

The players that year were:

Allen, Mac - Lawyer in Toronto, plays box for Peterborough, has won 2 Mann Cups and played for Team Canada at the 2010 Field Worlds, plays for Denver in the NLL.

Bishop's University Lacrosse (2003)
Recruiting is excellent. BU plays in the Baggataway for a second straight year.

2003 was a stellar year once again. The team went 9-1 on the season losing only one game against Brock 13-5. 2003 also saw the Gaiters beat McGill 29-0 with Drew Pollock getting the shut out. In exhibition play, the Gaiters beat the University of New Hampshire 16-12...and once again the Gaiters won their conference. When playoffs came around, BU beat The University of Western Ontario 11-6 in the semi-finals game before losing to Brock 10-5 in a rained soaked game still remembered as the Mud Bowl. That year the Baggataway Cup was held at Guelph University.

In 2003, Chris Lesanko was named an OUFLA All-Star attackman and BU's rookie of the year. The coaching staff consisted of Damien Roy (head coach) with Rob Engelken and Paul Lehmann as assistant coaches. The captains that year were Sylvain Laroche & Joel Myhre.

Another interesting tidbit of information: That year the Colorado Mammoth of the NLL signed defenseman Brian Potter to a contract.

Again, I might be missing a few but I have been able to track down 19 players on that 2003 team.

Bishop's University Lacrosse (2002)
From startup to playing in the championship in 2 years
688

This being the week leading to the Baggataway Cup I thought I'd bring memories of the BU teams that played in the finals for the coveted trophy since lax started at the university: 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006 before winning it in 2011.

Let's start with 2002, the year Bishop's entered OUFLA (Ontario University Field Lacrosse Association) as a full fledged member, and go over a few interesting facts that I've been able to gather here and there.

Bishop's Queens, Carleton, Toronto & McGill made up the East Conference in 2002. The team went 7-1 on the season and 1-1 in the playoffs bringing its overall record to 8-2 in its first official season in OUFLA. The team won the East Conference title. They beat the University of Western Ontario 11-8 in the semi-finals game while losing to Brock 9-8 in 3OT. All the Baggataway Cup games were played at Brock that year.

Ryan Scott was named League MVP & on the All Star team. Drew Pollock was named Rookie MVP & on the All Star team. Austin Dalgarno, Stuart MacFarlane & Steve Beketa were also named on the All Star team. Damien Roy was named Coach of the year.

Stuart MacFarlane & Paul Lehmann were the captains that year.

In 2002, Bishop's also hosted the Victory Cup (Canadian Senior Tier II Field Lacrosse Championship). All the games were played at Optimist Field in Lennoxville. The Gaiters lost to the Black Sheep (Ottawa) in a very emotional game in the semi-finals. British Columbia beat Bishop's for the Bronze medal. Saskatchewan beat the Black Sheep for the Gold medal. Rob Engelken coached the Gaiters during the Victory Cup tournament and Damien Roy ran the tournament.

An interesting tidbit is that Drew Pollock played against Bishops for team BC in the '02 Victory Cup as this was a club tourney and it was his club the Burrards that were representing BC. Bishop's goalie in the Victory Cup was Pascal Nolet from Sherbrooke.
I might be missing a few but I have been able to track down 17 players on that 2002 team.
