YOUNG GAITERS FALL TO ROUGE ET OR

Box Score SHERBROOKE, Que. – The Bishop's University Gaiters women's basketball team once again showed moments of exciting basketball but were unable to string 40 minutes together and fell 62-35 to the Laval Rouge et Or on Friday night in Mitchell Gym.  The Gaiters only managed single digits in three of the four quarters as Laval's veteran presence buried the purple and silver.

The Gaiters (0-3) have been plagued by slow starts throughout the 2013 campaign to date and Friday night was no exception. Laval (1-1) started on a 10-0 run that lasted just over seven minutes of play. Bishop's got on the board thanks to a pair of free throws from Naomi Zitt-James (Ajax, Ont.). The Gaiters first field goal came with 1:43 left in the quarter when Mara Lis Marchizotti (Buenos Aires, Argentina) scored in the paint off an excellent dish from exciting first-year point guard Edith Noblecilla Varela (Quito, Ecuador). Unfortunately for Bishop's they could not muster much more excitement and were down 13-6 heading into the second.

The second quarter was much of the same and a reflection of how the Gaiters season has been to date.  At times the young Gaiters showed like they could compete and battled hard with the Rouge et Or, and at times they struggled to find their flow.  Laval took the quarter 20-9 and grabbed a 33-15 halftime advantage.

Bishop's tried to make a run in the third however Laval was able to answer every push from the Gaiters. The stanza went 14-13 in favour of the visitors as they controlled play into the final frame.

With the game all but over Laval scored 15 points in the fourth and held Bishop's to 7 to grab their first victory of the year 62-35.

The Gaiters will have their hands full as they prepare for the final regular season game of 2013.  They face the undefeated and reigning RSEQ champion McGill Martlets (3-0) on Thursday, November 28 at 6 p.m. in Love Competition Hall. The exciting Gaiters will look to put 40 minutes of basketball together and end the first part of the season on a high note.
