SHERBROOKE, Que. – The Bishop's Gaiters women's soccer team played twice on the second weekend of the season against the No. 6 Montreal Carabins and the Laval Rouge et Or in RSEQ University action. Bishop's lost both games, falling 4-0 to the Carabins and 10-3 to the Rouge et Or.
Friday night saw the Gaiters travel to Montreal to face the Carabins in their third game of the season, having won their first two. Montreal pressured the Bishop's goal right from the opening whistle, scoring twice in the first fifteen minutes. They took a 2-0 lead into the half. The Gaiters tried to turn the game around in the second half and although they applied pressure, they were unable to put one past the keeper. Molly Bucholtz (Peterborough, Ont.) shone bright in the victory, making many key saves that kept the score close until the end.
On Sunday, Bishop's hosted the Laval Rouge et Or at Coulter Field. A high scoring first half saw the Gaiters open with a pair of goals in the first ten minutes from
Brett McCavour (Truro, N.S.) and
Micheline Chevrier (Cornwall, Ont.). Laval countered a great with four unanswered goals to end the half up 4-2. The Rouge et Or continued the high tempo offence in the second half, scoring six more times with Léa Chastenay-Joseph (Donnacona, Que.) netting four goals and Arielle Roy-Petitclerc (Quebec, Que.) scoring three by the end of the game. Aquila Henry-Cotnam (Richmond Hill, Ont.) blasted a hard shot into the back of the net. Bishop's keeper
Marie Pierre Harvey (Quebec, Que.) made fourteen saves in total, a number of them from point blank range.
"Today we had an awesome start, but it seemed like we ran out of steam pretty quick," said Gaiters head coach Phil Ribaux after Sunday's home loss. "We have many key injuries, five of our starters are out right now, which doesn't help us but we know what we have to work on to get better."
The Gaiters play two home games as part of the homecoming festivities next weekend. On Friday, September 20, they host the McGill Marlets, at 4 p.m., while on Monday, September 23, they will play the No. 5 Sherbrooke Vert et Or, kick off is slated for 7 p.m. Both games will be played at Coulter Field.
