LAX: BISHOP’S DEFEATED IN HOME OPENER

SHERBROOKE, Que. - The Bishop's Gaiters lacrosse squad fell short against the McGill Redmen on Friday night, in CFULA action in Lennoxville. Kevin Donovan (Bethany, Conn.) and Connor Goodwin (New Westminster, B.C.) combined for six goals as the visitors notched a 12-10 win. The game marked the start of the 2013 Homecoming Weekend.

The Redmen, the defending Baggataway Cup champions, took advantage of a slow start by the home team, taking a 4-1 lead after 20 minutes. The second frame saw the Gaiters showing signs of life by scoring four goals, thanks to the efforts of Gareth Gibson (Toronto), Alex Henderson (Enniskillen, Ont.), James Malloy (Uxbridge, Ont.) and Simon Winquist (Sherbrooke, Que.).

After McGill increased its lead to 10-6 after 60 minutes, Bishop's attempted a rally in the fourth quarter. Tayler Sipperly (Charlotte, N.C.) scored to make it 11-6 for McGill before the home crowd favorites found the back of the net four times in less than eight minutes, with goals from Gibson and Henderson (both their second of the game), Brett Conway (Cornwall, Ont.) and Ryan Dewar (Cornwall). However, Goodwin's third goal of the game shut down the hopes of a Bishop's comeback and gave the Redmen a 12-10 victory.

"While it is disappointing to roar back, have a chance to tie the game but fall short, we showed great fortitude, talent and heart", said Gaiters head coach Rob Engelken after the game. "It's easy to say we dug too deep of a hole but we're not afraid of being down 5-1 to anybody. We just need to continue to improve and get healthy, which we will do. We got ourselves back into the game and that was great."

The next regular season game for the Gaiters will be on September 28 on Coulter Field, as the purple and white will square off against Queen's at 8 p.m. Follow your Gaiters anytime at www.gaiters.ca.
