BISHOP’S GAITERS RECAP FROM A BUSY WEEKEND

SHERBROOKE, Que. – The Bishop's Gaiters women's soccer team played two games on the weekend hosting the UQTR Patriotes on Friday, Sept. 27 and travelling to face the No. 2 Laval Rouge et Or on Sunday, Sept. 29 in RSEQ University action. They lost each contest by a single goal.

On Friday evening, the Gaiters hosted the Patriotes at Coulter Field. UQTR scored in the 19th minute after a beautiful through ball found Valérie Claveau (Rimouski, Que.) who slotted the ball into the back of the net. Bishop's answered quickly after a 30-yard pass from Tiffany Smith (Oshawa, Ont.) picked out Emily Osmond (Belleville, Ont.) who rounded the keeper and passed the ball into the empty net. That made the score 1-1 in the 27th minute. The score didn't last long as the Patriotes took the lead once again. This time Annabelle Côté (Trois-Rivieres, Que.) sent a high looping shot into the top corner. UQTR took the 2-1 lead into the half.

Bishop's stormed out of the gates in the second half, pressuring the Patriotes goal, but came up empty. As the game progressed, the atmosphere got heated and seven yellow cards were handed out between the two teams. With the clock winding down, Gaiters keeper Molly Bucholtz (Peterborough, Ont.) made two top-drawer saves from point blank range to keep Bishop's in the game, however they could not capitalize late and lost the game 2-1.

The Gaiters traveled to Quebec City on Sunday to face the red-hot second ranked Laval Rouge et Or. Laval had scored 30 goals in just seven games entering the contest including 10 against the Gaiters the first time they met. Bishop's defense stepped up to the task and shut down the high-powered Rouge et Or offense for most of the game. Unfortunately for Bishop's, despite an outstanding team effort on the back line and stellar play by Bucholtz who made nine saves, Laval was able to score a single goal that held up to be the game winner. The Gaiters fell 1-0.

"We played amazing team defense today," said head coach Phil Ribaux on Sunday evening. "Molly was outstanding.  This is the second ranked team in the country, and we were able to keep them at bay for most of the game."

The Gaiters are back in action on Friday, Oct. 4 at 6 p.m. when the Concordia Stingers are in town.  Game time is set for 6 p.m. on Coulter Field.

Women's Rugby
The Bishop's Gaiters women's rugby team was also in action on Sunday.  They travelled to Montreal to face the No. 7 McGill Martlets.  McGill controlled the game and rolled onto a 109-5 victory.

The women's rugby team is next in action on Friday, October 4 when they host the No. 8 Ottawa Gee-Gees on Coulter Field.  Game time is set for 8:15 p.m.

Men's Rugby
The Bishop's Gaiters men's rugby squad played on Thursday night at McGill.  They fell 24-5 to the Redmen.

They are back on the pitch on Friday, Oct. 4 when they travel to Montreal to face the Concordia Stingers at 9 p.m.
