GAITERS CAN’T FIND GROOVE AGAINST MARTLETS

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SHERBROOKE, Que. – The No. 8-ranked McGill Martlets completed a two game sweep of the Bishop's Gaiters on Saturday night in RSEQ University Women's Basketball.  In the back end of a home-and-home series with their Montreal foes, the Gaiters fell 71-42 in front of the Mitchell Gymnasium faithful. McGill topped the Bishop's 66-43 on Thursday night.

Reigning RSEQ Rookie-of-the-Year Mariam Sylla (Conakry, Guinea) chalked up a "double-double" with 13 points and 11 rebounds on Thursday to lead the Martlets.  In the losing cause a pair of rookies cracked the double figure mark for Bishop's.  Naomi Zitt-James (Ajax, Ont.) and Genevive Onyeka (Toronto) each scored 10 points.

In Saturday night's rematch the Martlet's Gabriela Hebert (Chicoutimi, Que.) led all scorers with 16 points.  For the purple and silver it was third-year guard Catherine Rondeau (Sherbroooke, Que.) leading the way.  She scored 11 points on 4-for-9 shooting in 35 minutes.  Amazingly Rondeau, who was forced out of position with an injury to point guard Edith Noblecilla Varela (Quito, Ecuador), played all 40 minutes on Thursday night.

The pair of wins propels the Martlets (8-2) into solo first-place in the RSEQ.  The Gaiters fell to 0-10 with the losses and are in danger of missing the playoffs for the second straight year.

Bishop's is back in action on Friday, Feb. 7 when the No. 6-ranked Concordia Stingers (7-3) visit Mitchell Gym for a 6 p.m. tip-off.  The two squads will have a quick turnaround, as they will play the second half of a home-and-home series in Montreal on Saturday at 2 p.m.
