SHERBROOKE, Que. – No matter what happens in the final weekend of the regular season, the RSEQ University women's basketball playoff picture is set. Unfortunately for a second straight year the Bishop's Gaiters will not be part of it. They close out their 2013-14 season with a pair of contests against Concordia on Friday and Laval on Friday Saturday.
The Gaiters (0-14) will look to chalk up a victory in what has been a difficult campaign. Friday night they step onto the Mitchell Gym court for the final time this season at 6 p.m. The Concordia Stingers (9-5) enter the final weekend of play on a two game losing streak. Surely they will look for momentum heading into their first round playoff match-up with the UQAM Citadins (9-5). Placing is irrelevant as the inaugural RSEQ Final Four is set to take place at PEPS gym on the Laval University campus on Feb. 28 and March 1. The Gaiters played arguably their best contest of the year the last time these two teams met in Lennoxville, with the more experienced Stingers pulling away late and grabbing a 55-49 win.
Traditional senior night celebrations will take place in the middle of the double-header. Bishop's will honour
Catherine Rondeau (Sherbrooke, Que.), Charlotte Jurunn Matthiessen (Oslo, Norway) and
Marie-Michele Paquin (Magog, Que.) after their final home game.
"We will miss these three players," said Gaiters head coach
Alex Perno. "Catherine is an important part of our team, she's a captain and a natural leader. She was a great example for our younger players to follow. Marie developed into a great three-point shooter at the CIS level. She is a great kid and definitely scared defenses in this league. Charlotte is fun to be around. She is a versatile player and has been great for team chemistry. I wish all three of them all the best in their future endeavors."
Saturday Bishop's travels to Laval, a place they suffered a heart-breaking 54-43 loss in January after leading by as many as 18 points early on. The Rouge et Or are locked into the fourth and final playoff spot and know they will face McGill (12-2) in the first round of the playoffs.
The Bishop's Gaiters tip off for the final two times this season on Friday, Feb. 21 and Saturday, Feb. 22. Friday the Concordia Stingers will be in Mitchell Gym for a 6 p.m. start and on Saturday the Gaiters travel to Quebec City to face the Laval Rouge et Or at 5 p.m. Both games will be available live online.
