LACROSSE HOME SWEEP HIGHLIGHTS GAITERS EVENTFUL WEEKEND

SHERBROOKE, Que. – Bishop's University's remarkable rookie Taren Cook led the Gaiters lacrosse squad in a pair of victories over Trent and Queen's on Coulter Field this weekend. The women's soccer squad dropped a pair of close games to the No. 3 Montreal Carabins and McGill Martlets. Women's rugby fell to the Carleton Ravens in Lennoxville while men's rugby lost at Concordia.

Cook (Rothesay, N.B.) scored five goals in the two Gaiters games to lead them to 12-6 and 12-9 wins over their foes from Peterborough and Kingston in CUFLA action.

"Saturday night we started a little too slow," said Gatiers head lacrosse coach Rob Engelken. "Once we got into our flow I thought our offence controlled things well.

"Sunday was a hard fought battle, it was close all the way through. We took a few too many penalties and were a little sloppy. The game could have gone either way but we are happy to get the win."

The women's soccer team played some inspired soccer in their two contests this weekend however they fell to the nationally ranked Montreal Carabins 2-0 on Friday night in Lennoxville then lost 3-0 to McGill in Montreal on Sunday.

The Gaiters women's rugby team kicked-off for the third time in eight days this time against Carleton on Sunday. Bishop's fell 77-0 to the Ravens. This came after a 49-5 loss at Sherbrooke on Wednesday night.

The Gaiters men's rugby squad was in Montreal Sunday for a contest with the Concordia Stingers. Bishop's grabbed an 11-10 halftime lead before the hosts came roaring back in the second half and won 34-21.

All the Gaiters teams have a busy week ahead. The biggest game quite possibly could take place in Montreal on Wednesday, September 17 when the Gaiters lacrosse squad travels to play McGill at 8:30 p.m.  First place in the CUFLA East is on the line as the two teams are the lone undefeated ones and are tied atop the standings.
