BEDE BOOTS HIS WAY PAST THE GAITERS

SHERBROOKE, Que. – Laval kicker Boris Bede was 8-for-8 on field goal attempts en route to a 72-15 Rouge et Or victory over the Bishop's Gaiters in their home opener of the 2014 RSEQ University Football season on Saturday.

For Bishop's highlights came early as they grabbed an 8-7 lead in front of the purple faithful. Running back Ronlee King-Fileen (Toronto) scored the Gaiters first touchdown halfway through the first quarter on a seven-yard swing pass from quarterback Shane McDonald (Uxbridge, Ont.). McDonald later connected with fifth-year receiver Nathan Heather (Oromocto, N.B.) 2:03 into the second frame to give the Gaiters life as they cut the visitors lead to 18-15 at the time.  This came after Bede (Toulon, France) connected on his first three field goals of the day.

Laval exploded for 28 second quarter points to grab a 43-15 halftime lead. In the second half the two-time defending Vanier Cup champions and nation's top team rolled to a 72-15 victory.

Bede's eight successful field goals is a CIS record for a non-overtime game. He connected on attempts of 15 and 25 yards in the first quarter; 21, 28, 37 and 38 in the second stanza; he added a 28 yarder in the third and 15 yarder to open the fourth. His 32 total points is the eighth most ever in a single game. The rest of his scoring came on six converts and a pair of rouges. He also averaged 55.8 yards on five punts.

McDonald finished the game 16-for-31 for 231 yards, two touchdown passes and two interceptions. Heather caught four passes for 96 yards and the major while King-Fileen finished with 54 rushing yards and 29 receiving yards and a touchdown.

Bishop's is next in action on homecoming Saturday, September 27 as they host the Mount Allison Mounties on Coulter Field at 7 p.m. Follow the Gaiters anytime at www.gaiters.ca.
