Game Recap: Football |

SATURDAY TO FORGET IN MONTREAL

MONTREAL – Some games need to be forgotten and moved on from for the betterment of a young team. That was the case for the Bishop's Gaiters football team on Saturday as they fell 63-0 to Concordia in Montreal. The loss officially eliminates Bishop's from RSEQ University Football playoff contention.

Concordia dominated in all aspects of the game from the start.  The hosts took the opening kickoff and marched eight plays, 68 yards for an early 7-0 lead.  Bishop's offense sputtered and Concordia took advantage, scoring on two of their first three possessions plus they added a pick-six for a 21-0 lead through the first frame.  In the second quarter Concordia was relentless on offense, defense and special teams extending their lead to 37-0 at the halftime beak.

Having scored on offense and defense in the first half, Concordia tacked on a special teams score in the form of a 55-yard punt return for a touchdown midway through the third quarter. A touchdown and field goal in the fourth quarter ran score to 63-0 for the Stingers, the mark it finished at.

Overall, Concordia ran 69 offensive plays amassing 551 yards of total offense while Bishop's took 52 offensive snaps and mustered 133 yards.

Perhaps one of the lone bright spots for the purple and white on the grey day was a Ben Pouliot (Quebec City) interception in the Bishop's end zone to prevent further damage.  Defensive captain David Plourde (Drummondville, Que.) also recorded 10.5 tackles including one sack and had a pass break-up to lead the Gaiters defensive effort on an otherwise difficult day.

Bishop's sits at 1-5 on the year and are officially eliminated from playoff contention with two games remaining.  They will look to shake up the RSEQ University football standings when they host the No. 4 Montreal Carabins on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 1 p.m. on Coulter Field. The Carabins (4-2) are coming off a 22-16 victory over the No. 2 Laval Rouge et Or (5-1) on Saturday in Montreal.
