SHERBROOKE, Que. – The No.3 ranked Montreal Carabins took control of Saturday's RSEQ University Football match-up early and did not look back. They spoiled the Bishop's Gaiters senior day by a final score of 52-3 in Lennoxville.
Montreal's kicker Louis-Philippe Simoneau missed a field goal on the Carabins opening drive but they responded with four consecutive touchdowns to grab control of the game. While the Carabins rolled, the Gaiters struggled. Three of Montreal's first four major scores came thanks to miscues by the Gaiters, two interceptions, one returned for a touchdown, and a fumble.
With the momentum clearly on their side Montreal grabbed a 21-0 lead after the first quarter, only to score less than a minute into the second frame before extending their advantage to 35-0 at halftime.
Simoneau booted through a 39-yard field goal and Bishop's conceded a safety before finally the Gaiters got on the board.
Vincent Dube (Montmagny, Que.) kicked a 26-yard field goal with 10 seconds left in the third frame. It was the lone score for the Gaiters who were also held off the scoresheet a week ago at Concordia.
Montreal tacked on a touchdown, another conceded safety and a second field goal to make the final 52-3 from Coulter Field on a cool and breezy afternoon.
The Carabins ran 54 plays to Bishop's 46 and the visitors outgained the hosts 376-158 yards. Montreal also held onto the ball for 11 minutes more than the Gaiters and committed 19 penalties for 140 yards compared to Bishop's being flagged 12 times for 81 yards.
Bishop's started the day by honouring 13 players who will earn their degrees this year during a pre-game ceremony.
Jean Gayrard (Thetford Mines, Que.) was one of those seniors and led the Bishop's defense with 10 tackles while
David Plourde (Drummondville, Que.) added 8.5 in his final game in Lennoxville.
The Gaiters will close out their 2015 campaign at cross-town rival No.5 Sherbrooke. The Mayor's Cup will be on the line on Saturday, Oct. 31 at 1 p.m. at Stade de L'Universite.
