BISHOP’S MEN’S RUGBY AND LACROSSE CLOSE OUT REGULAR SEASON WITH SOLID RESULTS

| Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 SHERBROOKE, Que. – The Bishop's Gaiters and McGill Redmen men's rugby rivalry wrote another chapter on Sunday afternoon on Coulter Field. This one was one of the more bazaar 22-22 draws in RSEQ University men's rugby. Meanwhile the men's lacrosse team overcame a slow start to win convincingly 14-1 over Carleton in their final test of the 2015 CUFLA regular season. Also in action over the weekend the women's soccer team dropped a pair of games to Concordia and McGill.

Men's Rugby
Sunday afternoon's contest was a story of momentum swings on the brisk Lennoxville afternoon. Not only did the game provide some rare moments, the weather couldn't decide how it wanted to play a factor in the final regular season game for both teams.  At times the swirling wind blew hard; at times it calmed down and made way for sheets of rain.  Regardless, McGill jumped out to a quick start controlling play early after the Gaiters honoured their graduating seniors in a pre-game ceremony. The Redmen's persistence got them on the board.  Bishop's calmed down and responded with a converted try of their own less than seven minutes later.

The Redmen tacked on a try at the end of the first half to grab a 12-7 lead at the break.  The Gaiters gave their faithful fans something to cheer about in the second half when they took control against the undefeated Redmen. Bishop's scored three times while maintaining possession for most of the 40 minutes of the second half.  Highlighting the scoring for the purple was Robert McGovern (Bringham, Que.) who stole a loose McGill pass and scampered 40 meters for the Gaiters first try of the second half. It was his second on the day after he was awarded a penalty try to open the Gaiters scoring.  Charles Rumsby (Bromont, Que.) also scored twice for the home side who was seemingly on their way to their fifth win of the year.

McGill on an outstanding run from Thomas Stokes (Vancouver) cut into the Gaiters lead as the Coulter Field scoreboard unofficially read 80:00.  The ensuing kickoff went out of bounds from the Gaiters and allowed for McGill to maintain possession. The over 200 fans eagerly waited for the final whistle to blow but McGill once again powered in a try to knot the score at 22.  The ensuing conversion was unsuccessful and a game that had it all finished tied 22-22.

The game ultimately meant nothing in the standings as McGill had wrapped up first place in the division and now finishes the year at 6-0-1 while Bishop's ends up second at 4-2-1.  The Gaiters will host Sherbrooke on Saturday, Oct. 31 at 2 p.m. in an RSEQ quarter-final while the Redmen enjoy a bye to the semifinal a week later.

"I think there were some good things," said Gaiters head coach Charles Goode after the game.  "We maybe took our foot off the pedal a little too early and that's on me.  We have to be ready for Sherbrooke next week.  They are winless but have nothing to lose.  Their forward pack is enormous; we'll have to play smart rugby to be successful."

Lacrosse
The Bishop's Gaiters men's lacrosse team knew they were entering a trap game in their final contest of the CUFLA regular season on Saturday night when Carleton was in town.  The Ravens did not have an on-field victory all year while Bishop's had wrapped up second place in the East division.  The game was the final tune-up against CUFLA competition before the Gaiters step onto the field for the 2015 Baggataway Cup, an event they are hosting.

After honouring their graduating seniors pre-game the Gaiters were sluggish out of the gate.  They found themselves in a 1-0 hole after the first quarter.  The final three frames were a different story as Bishop's did not allow another tally from the visitors while scoring 14 times themselves.   They led 4-1 at halftime, 9-1 after the third stanza and 14-1 as the game ended.

The Gaiters then travelled to Norwich University for their annual jamboree on Sunday. They played a trio of games, earning a 3-3 draw with St. Michael's University, beating Castleton 7-4 then topping host Norwich 9-4.

Bishop's will now enjoy an extended break as they wait to find out their Baggataway Cup quarter-final opponent.  They are next in action on Friday, Nov. 6 at 6 p.m. on Coulter Field as Bishop's hosts the annual Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association Championships.  For complete tournament details and ticket information check out www.gaiters.ca.

"We had a real flat start," said Gaiters head coach Rob Engelken on Saturday.  "We can't afford to do that two weeks from now.  I'm excited to go to Norwich tomorrow and see different styles of lacrosse that will help prepare us for the Baggataway Cup weekend."

Women's Soccer
Despite having two games remaining in their RSEQ University schedule, the women's soccer team chose to honour their graduating seniors on Friday night as part of senior's weekend at Bishop's University.  The ceremony took place prior to their match against Concordia.  Unfortunately for the Gaiters the on-field result was not what they were looking for as the Stingers rolled to a 5-0 win.

Bishop's was back in action on Sunday at McGill. With some inspired play by senior defender and captain Emma Fingler (Burnaby, B.C.) the Gaiters battled allowing a goal in the 33rd minute but shutting down the Martlets other than that.  They were not able to find the back of the net themselves and lost 1-0. Bishop's sits at 0-10-2 with two games remaining.  They take on Montreal in Lennoxville on Friday night at 7 p.m. on Coulter Field and travel to face UQTR Sunday at 3 p.m. to wrap up the 2015 campaign.

Men's Basketball
The Gaiters men's basketball squad was in Southern Ontario for a trio of exhibition games.  They fell 74-55 at Guelph on Thursday night, lost 81-72 to Wilfrid Laurier on Friday then beat Laurentian 79-77 on Saturday.  The second and third games of the weekend were part of the Hawk Challenge hosted by Laurier.

Women's Basketball
On Thursday the Gaiters women's basketball team was also in Guelph, they dropped 65-46 contest to the Gryphons.  Friday they traveled to York for their second pre-season game of the weekend and left Toronto with a 53-52 victory to finish the weekend at 1-1.
