SHERBROOKE, Que. – The final touches are being put on the 2015 Baggataway Cup. The Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association championships are set to get underway on the Bishop's University campus on Friday. The Gaiters look to do more than just host the event, they want to hoist the cup.
The Gaiters and Guelph Gryphons will get the 31
st annual event underway on Coulter Field on Friday, Nov. 6 at 6 p.m. Bishop's will play in the quarter-final after finishing second in the CUFLA East division with a 10-2 regular season record. They take on the third ranked Guelph Gryphons from the west division. Guelph finished the year at 8-4 then topped Laurentian in their playoff matchup to qualify for the Baggataway Cup. The Gryphons enter as two-time defending champions of the event.
The second quarterfinal on Friday night will feature the west's second seed, Brock Badgers facing the third seed from the east Trent Excalibur. Brock completed the regular season at 9-3 then snuck by McMaster to qualify for the championship. Trent upset Queen's in their playoff game after finishing the regular season in fourth place with an even 6-6 record.
Waiting for the winners of each quarter-final are the top seeds from each division. The Western Mustangs won the west division regular season crown at 11-1 and will face the winner of Bishop's-Guelph while the McGill Redmen posted their fifth straight east division title with a perfect 12-0 record. McGill will play the winner of Brock-Trent in the second semifinal on Saturday.
The 2015 Baggataway Cup champion will be crowned on Sunday on Coulter Field. The title game faceoff is set for 1 p.m.
