SHERBROOKE, Que. – The Bishop's Gaiters women's basketball team hosts their annual Shoot for the Cure event on Saturday, February 14 when they take on the McGill Martlets at 6 p.m. Spearheaded by the Women's Basketball Coaches' Association, all 47 teams in the CIS take part in the great cause that benefits the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. The game is the second of weekend for the Gaiters who get started against the Concordia Stingers on Friday night also at 6 p.m.
Bishop's (0-12) has struggled with the Stingers (4-8) this season. In their three meetings Concordia averaged a 38-point margin of victory although the last contest in Lennoxville was just a 14-point difference.
Saturday, the No. 4 McGill Martlets (11-1) make the trek to Lennoxville for the annual Shoot for the Cure event. In its seven years the nation-wide event that has roots at Bishop's has raised more than $760,000 for Breast Cancer research. The Lady Gaiters will mark the occasion by donning their pink uniforms and playing with a pink ball all the while accepting donations for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
On the court McGill has been one of the most dominating teams in the country. The Gaiters have fallen to them three times most recently in their home opener in the New Gymnasium at the Bishop's Sports Centre on January 10.
"It is great to give back to the community that gives so much to us," said fourth-year Gaiters' captain
Dani Lumley. "We are lucky to get to do it playing the sport we love."
Leading the way for the Gaiters is rookie
Noemie Hamel-Petit (Magog, Que.). She is averaging 7.1 points per game while grabbing 4.3 rebounds per game. Point guard
Edith Noblecilla (Quito, Ecuador) has averaged a team-leading 33.9 minutes and four assists per game.
With four games remaining in the 2014-15 campaign the Gaiters will play two this weekend. Friday they host the Concordia Stingers and on Saturday the No. 4 McGill Martlets are in town for the annual Shoot for the Cure. Both games tip-off at 6 p.m. in Mitchell Gym.
