STRONG SECOND HALF LEADS NO.4 MARTLETS PAST GAITERS SATURDAY; STINGERS TOP GAITERS FRIDAY

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SHERBROOKE, Que. – Donning their pink uniforms in their annual Shoot for the Cure event, the Bishop's Gaiters women's basketball team was poised to pull off the biggest upset of the year on Saturday night.  They led the fourth-ranked McGill Martlets by two at halftime before the three-time defending RSEQ champions scored 19 points in each of the final two frames for a 51-34 victory.
 
The loss was the second one of the weekend for the Gaiters as Bishop's fell 67-46 to Concordia on Friday night.
 
Local rookie Noemie Hamel-Petit (Magog, Que.) once again led the way for Bishop's on Friday night against the Stingers.  She scored nine points and grabbed four rebounds in 30 minutes of playing time.  Point guard Edith Noblecilla (Quito, Ecuador) added eight points and had a team-leading 12 rebounds in the losing cause.
 
On Saturday in pink captain Dani Lumley (Sherbrooke, Que.) was the leader in the Gaiters effort.  She scored eight points, grabbed eight rebounds, had two steals and a block in 36 minutes. A slow start to the contest saw the game tied at four after the first frame as neither team was able to find success in the offensive end.  Bishop's outscored McGill 11-9 in the second frame and took their first halftime lead of the season into the break.  The Martlets found their form in the third quarter, outscoring Bishop's 19-4 in the frame and 19-15 in the final quarter to earn the 51-34 win.
 
The loss drops Bishop's to 0-14 on the year.  They have two games remaining, both at home in Mitchell Gym.  Their next contest if Saturday, February 21 against Laval at 6 p.m. and they will close out the season on Saturday, February 28 at 6 p.m. when UQAM is in town.
 
The other four RSEQ teams McGill (12-1), UQAM (10-3), Laval (6-7) and Concordia (5-8) all return Lennoxville for the RSEQ Final-4 set to take place from March 5-7 in Mitchell Gym.  The 2015 RSEQ champion will be crowned at the second annual event.  More information, tickets and tournament passes are available online at www.gaiters.ca.
