Box Score 2 SHERBROOKE, Que. – A strong effort on Friday night in their season debut in Mitchell Gym was not enough for the Bishop's Gaiters women's basketball team as they fell 68-52 to the UQAM Citadins in RSEQ University Basketball. Rookie
Noemie Hamel-Petit led the Gaiters scoring effort with 12 points while sophomore Naomi Zitt-James chipped in with 10.
Saturday night in Montreal was a different story when the two teams met in the back end of a home and home series. Bishop's turned the ball over 46 times, were outrebounded by 15 and attempted 31 fewer field goals than UQAM en route to a 67-28 loss.
Friday night marked the first contest of the 2014-15 campaign where Bishop's was back in the friendly confines of Mitchell Gym. A back and forth start saw the visiting Citadins grab a 16-11 lead after the first frame. Bishop's bounced back and tied the score at 22 at the 6:42 mark of the second quarter but then the Citadins took over. UQAM closed the stanza on a 15-2 run to grab a 37-24 advantage at the break.
Despite getting down as much as 17 points in the third quarter Bishop's clawed their way back to cut the margin to just 50-40 UQAM after the third quarter. The RSEQ's second best team refused to give in and eventually extended their lead and took control of the contest. The final score Friday night was 68-52 in favour of the visitors.
Hamel-Petit (Magog, Que.) led the way for the hosts with 12 points in 28 minutes of court time while Zitt-James (Ajax, Ont.) scored 10 points in the losing effort.
Saturday's game was all UQAM. Bishop's only managed their first points at the 3:34 mark of the first frame. The Citadins held leads of 16-3 after the first quarter, 42-10 at halftime and 56-21 after the third stanza before eventually winning 67-28.
Ashley White (Toronto) was the top scorer for Bishop's off the bench with seven points.
The loss officially eliminates the Gaiters (0-12) from playoff contention for the third consecutive year. As they build for the future they have four home games left; their next contest is against the Concordia Stingers on Friday, February 13 at 6 p.m.
