MIXED RESULTS FOR GAITERS IN FIRST FULL WEEKEND OF ACTION

Box Score 1 SHERBROOKE, Que. – Veteran Mason Austen potted five goals as the Gaiters lacrosse team beat Trent 13-9 to open the 2015 CUFLA Campaign in Peterborough on Saturday night.  Bishop's backed that performance up with a dominating 14-4 win over Ottawa on Sunday.

Elsewhere, the Gaiters women's soccer team opened their year with a pair of losses.  They fell 3-0 to UQAM on Friday night a lost a gutsy 2-0 decision to the Laval Rouge et Or on Sunday on Coulter Field. Women's rugby fell 80-7 at Concordia and the men's rugby squad dropped a close 20-13 decision also to the Stingers on Sunday. The Gaiters men's golf team improved their standing, finishing fifth at the second RSEQ Tournament, one they hosted at Milby Golf Club.

Lacrosse
Austen (High River, Alta.) led the way for the offense while the Gaiters were back stopped by goalie David Bigley (Newestminster, B.C.).  He made over a dozen saves, some of them the best of his career, as Bishop's kicked the season off on the right foot beating Trent 13-9.  Austen found the score sheet a pair of times on Sunday against the Ottawa Gee-Gees as the Gaiters cruised to the 14-4 victory and a 2-0 record after the first weekend of action. Leading the way both days for the Gaiters was James Malloy (Uxbridge, Ont.) who recorded six points in each of the first two contests.

Next up for the Gaiters, they travel west once again to face the Carleton Ravens on Saturday at 6 p.m. in Ottawa and the Queen's Gaels on Sunday at 12 Noon in Kingston.

Women's Soccer
In Lennoxville, the women's soccer team kicked off the 2015 season.  It was a disappointing 3-0 loss to the UQAM Citadins on Friday night on Coulter Field.  The loss did not discourage the Gaiters when they took to the pitch on Sunday. They held the nation's top team and defending national champion Laval Rouge et Or off the scoresheet until the 63rd minute.  Keeper Rebecca Bensimon (Dollard-Des-Ormeaux, Que.) was sensational making 19 saves on the afternoon to keep the Gaiters in the game as they looked for the upset at home.

Following a pair of home contests, the Gaiters hit the road twice next weekend to take on Sherbrooke on Friday night at 6 p.m. and Concordia on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Women's Rugby
Newcomer Taylor Merrithew (Kingston, Ont.) scored the Gaiters women's rugby team's lone try in an 80-7 loss to the No.8-ranked Concordia Stingers in Montreal on Sunday.  Emily Norris (Ogden, Que.) continued her fine season kicking through the convert. The loss drops Bishop's to 0-3. They are next in action on Sunday at 3 p.m. on Coulter Field against the No. 5 Ottawa Gee-Gees.

Men's Rugby
In a downpour at Concordia, the Gaiters men's rugby team jumped on the Stingers early.  Mike Izzard (Oakville, Ont.) scored an electric try from 35 metres out, burning four defenders.  He also helped set-up a try from Robert McGovern (Brigham, Que.), his first in purple and silver.  Together they paced the Gaiters to a 10-5 halftime advantage.  In the second stanza Bishop's got into penalty trouble and Concordia took advantage, scoring 15 unanswered points heading into the final minutes.  Nic Charlton (Montreal) put through a successful penalty kick to with three minutes remaining to make the final 20-13 and earn the Gaiters a bonus point in the loss.

The men's rugby squad is next on the pitch on Sunday at 1 p.m. when cross-town rivals Sherbrooke make the short trek to Coulter Field.

Golf
Jake Sterio (Scarborough, Ont.) fired a second round two-under par 71 to lead the Gaiters men's golf team to a fifth place finish, up four spots from their first event.  Bishop's had home course advantage as they hosted it at Milby Golf Club.  Sterio's 71 came on the heels of an 82 opening day round and put him in a tie for ninth individually.

Bishop's junior Jacob Gordanier (Kingston, Ont.) will not soon forget this event.  Competing as an individual in the competition Gordanier aced the 157-yard par-3 sixth hole on the first day.  It was his first-ever hole-in-one. Gordanier finished the day firing an 86.

On the women's side just two Gaiters competed.  Lindsay Reid (Beaconsfield, Que.) finished in a tie for 18th and rookie Zoe Whitfield (Calgary) finished tied for 22nd.

The Gaiters tee it up one more time at the three day RSEQ Championship set to take place at the Ile de Montreal Golf Club from Sep. 28-30.
