SHERBROOKE, Que. – Twelve goals and five assists is a good month for some, a good year for others. Bishop's Gaiters lacrosse attackman James Malloy tallied those numbers in just two contests over the weekend. His efforts helped Bishop's top Carleton and Queen's in CUFLA East action and move to 4-0 on the year.  
 
Back home, Lee Hudson (Sutton, Que.) led the Gaiters men's rugby team to a 19-17 victory over the Sherbrooke Vert et Or on Sunday. The women's rugby team fell to the No. 3 Ottawa Gee-Gees in the second half of a Sunday double header on Coulter Field.  Also in action, the women's soccer team secured their first point of the season, drawing 1-1 with Concordia on Sunday in Montreal.
 
Lacrosse
Malloy (Whitby, Ont.), a fifth-year biology major had a career weekend.  After being named a second star last week by In Lacrosse We Trust with 12 points, Malloy made sure to stay on their radar.  His 29 points through four games leads all of CUFLA and is eight better than his teammate Mason Austen (High River, Alta.) who sits second place.
 
Bishop's scored early and often against Carleton, holding 7-0 halftime advantage before finishing with a 12-5 victory over the Ravens in Ottawa on Saturday night. Malloy scored six times and had three assists.  A quick turnaround saw Bishop's in Kingston to play the Queen's Gaels at 12 p.m. on Sunday.  The 5-4 Bishop's advantage at halftime was extended thanks to a five goal third stanza while they allowed just one. The final was 14-8 with Malloy adding six goals and picking up another two assists.  After two weekends on the road, Bishop's will open their home schedule against the Trent Excalibur on Saturday at 5 p.m. on Coulter Field.  A re-match with Queen's is set for Sunday at 12 p.m. also in Lennoxville.
 
Men's Rugby
Captain Nic Charlton (Montreal) booted through two conversions on three Gaiters' tries and that proved to be the difference as the Bishop's topped cross-town rival Sherbrooke 19-17 on Sunday.  The game marked the Gaiters home opener. Sherbrooke also managed three tries thanks to their over-powering forward pack but only was able to convert on one of them.
 
Bishop's Coach Charles Goode singled out Charlton as well as Hudson and Robert McGovern (Bringham, Que.) as key cogs in the Gaiters line-up on the day.
 
"Lee played through some pain today," said the reigning RSEQ Coach of the Year. "He was outstanding on defense and on attack.  He was also fantastic with the ball in his hand. Robert was amazing; he really showed off his speed every time they kicked to the back. Nic was solid on the day including a nice little try he jumped in before the half."
 
Bishop's is next in action on Sunday in Montreal at 3 p.m. against up-start ETS.
 
Women's Soccer
The Bishop's Gaiters women's soccer team pulled off a gutsy 1-1 draw in Montreal on Sunday against the Concordia Stingers. Short-handed due to injuries, Bishop's was backed in net by Aquila Henry-Cotnam (Richmond Hill, Ont.), a natural striker. The Gaiters put forward one of their best performances of the year.  The Bishop's goal, their first of the season in the team's fourth game, came from junior Tiffany Smith (Oshawa, Ont.) with less than 10 minutes to go.  The tally gave Bishop's the lead, unfortunately for them the hosts answered with less than three minutes left to make the final 1-1.  
 
The draw came in Bishop's second game of the weekend.  A slow start on Friday night left the Gaiters chasing the Sherbrooke Vert et Or in Sherbrooke.  The final was 5-0 but Bishop's found themselves trailing 2-0 less than 10 minutes in and 4-0 at halftime. A stronger second half paved the way for the Gaiters to excel in Montreal on Sunday.
 
Bishop's is next in action Friday night in Montreal against the No.5-ranked Carabins at 6 p.m.  They return to Coulter Field on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. against the UQTR Patriots.
 
Women's Rugby
The Bishop's women's rugby squad knew they were in tough on Sunday against the nation's third ranked team, the Ottawa Gee-Gees.  They lost 72-5 but fought until the very end.  The Gaiters try came from Mercedes Liedtke (Pembrooke, Ont.) in the 78^th minute.
 
After playing four games in 18 days to open the season, the Gaiters will now enjoy a bye week.  They are next in action on Coulter Field on Friday, Oct. 2 at 6 p.m. as part of Bishop's annual homecoming festivities.
 
Women's Hockey
The Bishop's Polar Bears women's hockey team played two exhibition games over the weekend in Ottawa including one against a CIS opponent.  On Saturday Bishop's fell 7-0 to the Carleton Ravens, but Bianka Landry, the Polar Bears goalie was outstanding making 62 saves in the game.  On Sunday Bishop's suited up against the Ottawa Ice, a senior women's team from the nation's capital. Bishop's lost 7-0.
