Box Score 2 SHERBROOKE, Que. – On a day where the mercury reached 30 degrees Celsius, upwards of 40 degrees Celsius with the humidex and hotter on the Coulter Field turf, the young Bishop's Gaiters women's rugby squad played their second game in five days. Bishop's ultimately fell 45-14 to the Montreal Carabins on Monday, Sept. 7 in CIS women's rugby action, but showed promise on the pitch.
The Gaiters two tries came from rookies
Erika Scott (Dewittville, Que.), who also scored three times in their opener last Wednesday, and
Tasha Duncan (Ormstown, Que.). Sophomore kicker
Emily Norris (Ogden, Que.) converted on both attempts coming from sharp angles. Yes, the Gaiters gave up seven tries, including a pair in the first minutes of each half, but there is progress.
A season ago the Gaiters tallied 34 points, in 2013 just 12. This year through a pair of contests they have put 43 on the scoreboard.
"I was disappointed with our start," said Gaiters' bench boss
Adam Spirk after Monday's contest. "It seemed as though our team had no beliefs in their abilities. We controlled the last 20 minutes of the first half and were rewarded with a nice try. I was thrilled with our fight until the final whistle. It was great to see Emily make two difficult converts and Tasha get rewarded with a penalty try towards the end of the game. It's tough to single out individuals as this year's group really plays for one another. They left it out there today."
Monday's loss drops Bishop's to 0-2, while Montreal improves to 1-0. The Gaiters hectic start to the 2015 campaign continues on Sunday, Sept. 13 against the Concordia Stingers in Montreal. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
Men's BasketballYouth is also a reality for the 2015-16 edition of the Bishop's Gaiters men's basketball team. They will be young, but there is reason to be optimistic in the camp of the reigning RSEQ Champions. Bishop's split a pair of exhibition contests on the weekend in Mitchell Gym against NCAA opponents.
On Saturday, Bishop's lost a nail bitter 81-79 to Manhattanville College of New York. The Gaiters were led by newcomer Abdul Kamane (Montreal) who tallied 21 points on 8-for-17 shooting. Senior guard
Jona Bermillo (Montreal) scored 19 and fellow veteran
David Belanger (Sherbrooke) chipped in with 12. Yassin Naji (Lunel, France) rounded out Gaiters in double digits as he netted 10 in the losing cause.
Sunday Kean University from New Jersey stopped by Lennoxville. For the second straight night over 400 Gaiter fans poured through the Mitchell Gym doors to support the Gaiters. Bishop's gave the patrons something to cheer about; an 81-72 victory. Belanger and Bermillo led the way scoring 18 and 17 respectively. Kamane added 14 and Naji 10 in the win.
Bishop's will now have time to familiarize themselves with one-another as their next official game action is not until they travel to North Bay, Ont. for the Nipissing University Invitational Tournament from Oct. 2-4.
