BISHOP’S BESTS ROUGE ET OR

QUEBEC CITY, Que. – The Bishop's University men's basketball team found the win column for the first time in 2016, Saturday night in Quebec City.  They won 77-73 over the Laval Rouge et Or after falling 75-68 to them the night before in Lennoxville.

After a week away from RSEQ action the Gaiters found themselves battling with a 5-5 Laval squad.  On Friday night the Gaiters led early on and went into the half up 40-36.  A slow offensive third and fourth frame for Bishop's let the Rouge et Or back in the game to win 75-68.

David Belanger (Sherbrooke, Que.) was a bright spot for the Gaiters, grabbing a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds.  He was a perfect 9-9 from the floor and 6-6 from the line.  Jona Bermillo (Montreal) and Abdul Kamane (Montreal) both scored 13 points on the night.  Thibaud Dezutter (Namur, Belgium) led Laval with 17 points on 6-11 shooting in 24 minutes on the floor.  Alexandre Leclerc (Saguenay, Que.) had 16 points.

Bishop's had a slow start to the game in Quebec City, trailing 40-28 at halftime.  A strong third and fourth quarter for Bishop's helped close the gap and put them up six points with a minute to play.  Laval came within two points but Bishop's ultimately grabbed the 77-73 win.  Belanger backed up his performance from Friday with 18 points and six rebounds.  He was 6-6 from the floor and 6-8 from the charity stripe.  Bermillo led Bishop's with 19 points.  Karl Demers-Belanger (Quebec City) and Leclerc both had 19 points for the Rouge et Or.

"I am really proud of our guys resolve," said Gaiters bench boss Rod Gilpin. "We had many opportunities to quit in the second half. When such a young team comes back from being down 18 late in the third versus a quality opponent it speaks to their character and resilience. The future looks bright."

Bishop's will play a home-and-home series this coming weekend against No. 4 McGill.  Both games are set to tip at 8 p.m.
