Jaeden Marwick had his second straight game with over 300 yards in passing and kicker Vincent Dubé tied a school record with four field goals, but it was not enough to hold off the Concordia Stingers, who prevailed 50-34 in the 30
th annual Shrine Bowl Canada held in Montreal on Saturday.
Marwick, who hails from Regina, completed 28 of 46 passes for 334 yards and had a pair of touchdowns, his second straight 300-yard game. His scoring throws came in the second and fourth quarters, as he found
Jerome Valbon and
Trey Millings, respectively. He accounted for all three Gaiter touchdowns, as he also ran in for a score with 5:36 to go. He is the first Gaiter with consecutive 300-yard games since Jordan Heather had five in a row in 2013.
Dubé (Montmagny, Que.), for his part, was perfect on four field goal attempts, tying the school mark. He split the uprights on tries from 28, 32, 33 and 37 yards, as he finished with a team-high 14 points.
The Gaiters led 16-15 at halftime, but Concordia broke the game open with 26 third-quarter points, taking a 41-19 lead with 15 minutes to go.
Jean-Guy Rimpel and Justin Julien each scored two touchdowns for the Stingers. Julien's majors both came through the air, while Rimpel had one rushing touchdown and one receiving. Trenton Miller and Yanic Lessard both also found the end zone for Concordia, who added a field goal from Patrick Mills and three safety touches.
Miller finished the game going 27-for-39 passing, for 451 yards, with one interception to go with his four touchdown passes. Rimpel led the Concordia rushers with 16 carries for 60 yards, while Julien had seven catches for 184 yards.
For the Gaiters,
Trey Millings (Laval, Que.) was the pick of the rushers, with seven carries for 60 yards,
Cecil Belanger had six catches for 85 yards, while Valbon ended with five catches for 60 yards.
Defensively,
Ryan Hector (Brampton, Ont.) led Bishop's with seven tackles, cementing his place as the team's top tackler with 30 on the year to date.
Ben Pouliot (Quebec City, Que.) had the Gaiters' only interception on the day.
Lloyd Bureau led Concordia with 11.5 tackles, including nine solo stops.
The Stingers outgained Bishop's 534 to 359, and made 31 first downs to the Gaiters' 27. The teams combined for 37 penalties, with Bishop's losing 135 yards on 18 penalties, while Concordia was flagged 19 times for 144 yards.
The Quebec university football league is idle for the Thanksgiving weekend. The Gaiters (1-4) are back in action on Friday, Oct. 14, when they host McGill. Concordia, meanwhile, visits Sherbrooke on Oct. 15.
