SHERBROOKE, Que. – For the second time in less than 19 hours the Bishop's Gaiters lacrosse team stepped onto Coulter Field to face the Nipissing Lakers. After Saturday's blowout, Sunday afternoon's contest in the cold, wet and windy weather proved to be more of a nail bitter. After pacing themselves to a large lead, Bishop's held on for a 15-12 victory and clinch third place in CUFLA East and a home playoff game.
How it Happened:
Bishop's snuck out to a 4-2 lead after the first quarter then poured it on in the second frame with an offensive onslaught. Their advantage was 10-4 at halftime. The Gaiters extended the lead to 13-4 in the third frame before Nipissing pushed back. The foes from North Bay went on a run at one point out-scoring Bishop's 7-1 at the end of the third and start of the fourth quarters. The Lakers were able to cut the advantage to 14-11 before Bishop's seemingly put the nail in the coffin with just under five minutes remaining thanks to a power play marker. The final score was 15-12 in favour of the hosts who sweep the weekend doubleheader with Nipissing, the first two times the two squads had met in their existence.
The victory means Bishop's will finish in third spot in the CUFLA East standings and host a playoff game on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. Their opponent is still to be determined as Ottawa and Queen's wrap up the regular season at press time.
