The Bishop's Gaiters men's rugby team started perfectly on Sunday when they were in Montreal to face ETS. They pinned the hosts in their own end and controlled the first 10 minutes of the game through solid rucking and good ball movement.
Shayne Crawford scored from a metre out after a solid Gaiter forward effort from a lineout.
Long Tim Nixon converted for a Gaiters 7-0 advantage.
ETS was able to capitalize in the 34
th minute after the Gaiters seemingly lost focus. A pair of missed tackles gave the Piranahs the score under the posts.
Gaiters' captain
Lee Hudson had a stern chat at halftime and the second half went better for Bishop's
Tries by
Patrick Lawton, converted by Nixon and incredible defence by Hudson, Alex Charest and Crawford, saw the game shift in the Gaiters' favour.
With 17 minutes to play
Shayne Crawford risked a difficult 10-metre pass against the flow of play to put Robbie McGovern through in space up the left wing. McGovern beat three defenders to score and Nixon converted from 30 metres left of the posts.
Despite three clean ETS line breaks and some solid possession by the Piranhas, ETS was held to just one score in the second half, an unconverted try.
Nixon ended with a penalty goal to put the Gaiters ahead by 24-12 and wrap-up the scoring.
"We played well for periods of the game but we will have to stop committing mental errors on defence if we are to compete with powerhouse McGill ," said Gaiters head coach
Charles Goode. "Our scrums have improved and lineouts were ok, hopefully we can use these to build more pressure through possession and territory"
Next up for Bishop's (3-1) is the McGill Redmen (3-1) on Friday, Oct. 7 at Molson Stadium in Montreal.
The men's rugby 'B' team also took on ETS and rolled to a 42-0 victory on Sunday.
