Men’s Basketball: Gaiters close out fall with 81-73 loss to McGill

SHERBROOKE – A 34-point outburst from Kendrick Jolin led the McGill Redmen to an 81-73 come-from-behind win over the Bishop's Gaiters in university men's basketball action at the Mitchell Gym, Saturday. The freshman point guard was 10-for-14 from the field, including six three-pointers, as he set a conference season-high for points in a game.

Bishop's (3-9, 0-4 RSEQ) came out strongly, leading by as many as 13 points in the first quarter, and held a 26-15 advantage at the short break. McGill (9-3, 3-1 RSEQ) came back in the second quarter, and took a 38-36 lead with 3:39 to go in the first half. The Gaiters scored seven straight points to take the lead back, and held a 46-41 edge at halftime.

The Gaiters still held a narrow 62-61 lead after a back-and-forth third quarter, and a three-pointer by Owen Martel (Erin, Ont./Georgetown D.H.S. ) put the Gaiters up 69-68 with 5:05 to play. But the Redmen went on a 13-2 run to take the lead for good, the last of the game's 14 lead changes, as Bishop's was held to only one field goal in the last five minutes.

Bishop's was led by David Belanger (Sherbrooke, Que./Champlain-St. Lambert), who had 16 points before fouling out in the fourth quarter. Jona Bermillo (Montreal, Que./Vanier College) had 13, Nick Harvey (Saint-Bruno, Que. /Champlain-St. Lambert) chipped in with 11 and Abdul Kamane (Montreal, Que./Vanier College ) added nine.

Dele Ogundokun and Jenning Leung were the other Redmen in double figures, with 10 points each.

Bishop's shot 53.7 per cent from the field, while the Redmen hit 50 per cent of their shots. The Redmen held a slight rebounding edge, 31-30. The Gaiters committed 21 fouls in the contest, sending McGill to the line 33 times, hitting 19 of them. Bishop's was 7-for-16 from the charity stripe.

The Gaiters now head into their exam and Christmas break. They resume conference play on Jan. 13, 2017, when they visit Laval. Their first home game of the New Year is the next night, also against the Rouge et Or.
