SHERBROOKE, Que. – The Bishop's University lacrosse team is heading to St. Catharines for the Canadian University Field Lacrosse Baggataway Cup Championship, hosted by Brock University from Nov. 4-6.
Bishop's (7-5) will face the Guelph Gryphons (8-4) on Friday night at 8 p.m. Bishop's punched their ticket to the Championship last weekend on Coulter Field with a 12-10 win over Queen's. Guelph beat Laurentian 14-3 to get their ticket.
Bishop's finished the regular season third in the CUFLA East behind Trent (11-1) and McGill (11-1). Guelph finished third in the CUFLA West, behind Western (11-1) and the hosts Brock (11-1).
Andrew Neilson led the Gaiters with 23 goals through the regular season,
Rhett Handley led in the assist column with 20 for a total of 36 points.
Brett Ulbikas led the Gryphons with 30 goals and 16 assists, he was named a CUFLA All-Canadian at midfield.
The last time that the Gaiters and Gryphons met was last year's Baggataway Cup at Bishop's University. Bishop's took the contest, 6-5 in thrilling fashion. Sherbrooke native
Simon Winquist scored with two seconds left in the fourth frame to put the Bishop's Gaiters up 6-5 and punch their ticket into the 2015 Baggataway semifinal. The Gaiters 2015 championship ended with a 17-12 loss to Western in the semi- final.
Bishop's last hoisted the cup in 2011, when they defeated Brock 11-6 in London, Ont.
The winner between the Gaiters and Gryphons will face the Western Mustangs on Saturday at 4 p.m., who received a bye for their first place finish. The championship game will be at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
