MEN’S RUGBY: Gaiters head to McGill to take on old rivals in provincial semi

SHERBROOKE, Que. – The Bishop's University men's rugby team continues their quest for a provincial title on Saturday, as they visit the McGill Redmen on Saturday at Percival Molson Stadium in Montreal. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.

The Gaiters (3-3-1 RSEQ, 1-0 playoffs) head to the semi-finals on the heels of a thrilling 33-26 (AET) win over the Concordia Stingers. The Gaiters led through most of the penalty-filled match, but trailed early in extra time before responding with two straight tries in to come away with the win.

Five different players scored tries for the Gaiters, with Nicolas Doyon (Lévis, Que.) scoring the game-winner in at the end of the first half of extra time, three minutes after Lee Hudson (Sutton, Que.) tied the game up. Patrick Lawton (Halifax, England) went 3-of-4 on conversions and added a try to finish with a team-high 11 points. Josh Bray (Lennoxville, Que.) added the other conversion, while Ewan Lawton (Halifax, England) and William Vendramini (Dorval, Que.) also had tries for Bishop's.

McGill won the "1-4-5" division with a 6-1 record this year, and had a bye through the first round of the playoffs. They won the only matchup between the two clubs this season, 27-10 in Montreal on Oct. 7.

"The first time we went against them it was a tough battle all the way to the end," said Hudson, the Gaiters' veteran captain. "They took advantage – they capitalized on our mistakes and ended up pulling away."

This is the 15th playoff matchup between the Gaiters and Redmen since 1990. The Redmen are 10-5 in those games, and have won the past six playoff games between the clubs. The last Bishop's playoff win over McGill was in 2003, a 16-11 win in the QSSF Championship – the Gaiters' last provincial title. The teams last met in the post season two years ago, when the Redmen escaped with a 21-17 win in Montreal.

"We're going to have to improve our discipline," the Gaiters' Number 8 added. "If we want to beat them, we're going to have to play a lot better. We're going to have to come out with the same intensity and really stick to our system which helped us win today."

The winner of Saturday's game will face the winner of Sunday's Montreal-ETS semi-final in the RSEQ championship game next week.

The game will be webcast by McGill, and fans can also follow @BishopsGaiters on Twitter for updates.
