Bishop's Game Notes

SHERBROOKE, Que. – It will be a weekend of firsts for the Bishop's Gaiters and Concordia Stingers in RSEQ women's basketball.  Ironically their home-and-home series that begins on Thursday night in Montreal will also mark the last of its kind this season. The foes tip-off in Montreal on Thursday, then renew hostilities on Saturday in Mitchell Gym. Game time of both games is set for 6 p.m.

About Concordia
The Stingers sit at 2-8 in RSEQ conference play leaving them alone in fourth place, just four points up on the Gaiters and 10 points back of third place UQAM (7-3).  Leading the way for Concordia is three-time all-star Marilyse Roy-Viau.  She sits third in the conference averaging 14.9 points per game and is seventh in rebounding at 6.1 per game. She's also firing at a rate of .425 from the floor (4th in the RSEQ).

About Bishop's
Bishop's is still looking for their first regular season victory of the season. Sitting at 0-10 the playoffs seem to be at a distance but looking at the standings they are not that far away.  Trailing Concordia by just four points with three games remaining against the Stingers anything can happen.  They have six games left overall and will need to turn it around starting on Thursday. Third place is out of the question with UQAM already securing seven wins on the year. Number nine Laval is in second place at 8-4 while the No.2 McGill Martlets are 9-1 and leading the way.

The Last Time
Concordia and Bishop's tipped off in week four of the season in Montreal, the last before the Christmas break.  The Stingers rolled to a 69-34 win for their first victory of the year. Three hosts scored in double figures led by Marie-Eve Martin with 23 points.

A Weekend of Firsts
Thursday's contest will be the first for the Gaiters against the Stingers with Craig Norman as the lead coach. Saturday will also mark the first time Concordia's bench boss Tenicha Gittens will visit Mitchell Gymnasium as head coach of the Stingers.

Coach Norman's Knowledge
"I think Concordia is a top-10 team in the country, they play in a tough conference," said Norman. "They are very dangers and have three terrific players.  They are physical and experienced and are going to be a tough match-up for us."

This Rookie is Ready
Bishop's is bolstered by rookie sensation Ashley Milhomme who has definitely thrown her hat into the ring as a contender for RSEQ Rookie of the Year. The floor general leads all RSEQ freshmen in scoring at 10 points per game (11th in RSEQ).  She's also eighth in the conference with 2.4 assists per game. Add her 11 made three pointers (T-9th) and 3.9 defensive rebounds per game (10th) and she will certainly be a topic of conversation when the all-star and major award ballots go out at the end of the month.

No Sophomore Slump
Reigning Bishop's Gaiters Female Freshman of the Year Noemie Hamel-Petit is enjoying a strong second season in purple. She's scoring 8.3 points per game and her 5.1 boards per game place her among the top in the conference for guards. She also 26-37 from the charity stripe (70.3 percent), good for sixth in the RSEQ.  She puts up these numbers while playing a team high 35.9 minutes per game, third most in the five team league.
