SHERBROOKE, Que. – Super sophomore Noemie Hamel-Petit scored 13 points while playing 39 out of 40 minutes however the effort was not enough as the Bishop's Gaiters fell 58-46 to the Concordia Stingers on Saturday night in Mitchell Gym. The game was the back end of a home-and-home series that saw Concordia win 80-51 on Thursday in Montreal in RSEQ University Women's basketball action.
 
After a performance to forget on Thursday night where Concordia led from start to finish, Saturday's contest was a better effort from the Gaiters. The Magog, Que. native Hamel-Petit helped pace the Gaiters to a 24-23 halftime advantage.  The winless Gaiters looked poised to stun the Stingers however committed 10 of their 28 turnovers in the third frame and lost the quarter 23-8 on the scoreboard. The deficit was too big and Concordia held on for a 58-46 win.
 
Hamel-Petit scored 13 points, the only Gaiter in double figure while rookie Charlene Pettigrew of Montreal grabbed 12 rebounds and scored eight points. The 39 minutes that Hamel-Petit played on Saturday came on the heels of seeing 36 minutes of action in Thursday's loss.
 
Rookie sensation Ashley Milhomme of Repentigny continued to perform well as she led the Gaiters with 12 points on Thursday night.  She backed that performance up with five points and six boards on Saturday.  Ajax, Ontario's Naomi James rounded out the double digit performances in the first game with 10 points.
 
Richelle Gregoire of Ste. Therese, Que. was Thursday's top scorer with 19 points for the Stingers. She also scored 16 and grabbed 12 rebounds on Saturday in Lennoxville.  Perennial all-star Marilyse Roy-Viau of Montreal recovered from a sub-par performance by her standards on Thursday. She scored 18 points on Saturday including seven from the charity stripe.
 
The two victories clinch a playoff spot for the Stingers who improve to 4-8 on the season while the Gaiters drop to 0-12.
 
Next up for Bishop's, they host their annual Shoot for the Cure event on Friday, Feb. 12 in Mitchell Gym.  The Gaiters will don their pink uniforms while they raise money to support the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation.  The initiative that was started at Bishop's is in its ninth year and all women's basketball teams in the CIS participate.  As a group the CIS will surpass the $1,000,000 mark in donations this year.  The festivities get underway at 6 p.m. as the UQAM Citadins are in town.
