Jessica Lubin hit a free throw with 10 seconds left to give the UQAM Citadins a come-from-behind 52-51 win over the Bishop's Gaiters in RSEQ women's basketball action at the UQAM sports centre in Montreal, Saturday. The 26-year-old centre's 15
th point of the night broke a 51-51 tie, giving the Citadins a sweep of the home-and-home series against the Gaiters.
Bishop's (6-9, 1-7 RSEQ) led through most of the game, taking a 19-6 lead after the first quarter, and a 25-16 lead into halftime. The Gaiters stretched their lead to 15 points with 1:43 left in the third quarter, but UQAM responded with an 8-0 run to end the period and cut the margin in half.
UQAM (13-6, 7-3) took as a three-pointer by Queteline Celestin with 3:14 left gave them a 49-47 lead. The Gaiters tied the game twice in the late stages, on baskets by
Edith Noblecilla (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Santo Domingo de Guzmain) and
Ashley Milhomme (Repentigny, Que. /Collège Montmorency), but could not get back ahead.
Noemie Hamel-Petit (Magog, Que./Champlain-Lennoxville) led the Gaiters with 12 points, while Milhomme added 10.
Maeva Dinalle (Paris, France) and Noblecilla added nine each.
Mara Marchizotti (Buenos Aires, Argentina) grabbed a game-high nine rebounds for the Gaiters, who outrebounded UQAM 29-19.
For UQAM, Celestin's 19 points led all scorers, with Lubin adding 15.
The Citadins slightly outshot Bishop's, 36% to 35.2%. Bishop's committed 17 turnovers, to the Citadins' 11.
The Gaiters return to action next week with a home-and-home against the Concordia Stingers. The first game is set for Thursday in Montreal, with the return match Saturday at the Mitchell Gym.
