Gaiters drop high-scoring contest to Golden Hawks

SHERBROOKE, Que. - The Bishop's Gaiters had a trio of 20-point performances, but it was not enough as they fell, 106-92, to the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks in non-conference men's basketball action at the Mitchell Gym in Lennoxville, Friday. Abdul Kamane (Montreal, Que./Vanier College) and Alex Boissé each had 22 points for the Gaiters, while David Belanger (Sherbrooke, Que./Champlain-St. Lambert) had 14.

For Laurier (3-2), Matthew Minutillo led all scorers with 28 points, while Ali Sow had 20. Ntore Habimana had a double-double with 17 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. The Golden Hawks shot 53.6 per cent from the field, including 46.7 per cent (14-for-30) from three-point range.

The Gaiters (0-8) also got 12 points from Yassin Naji (Lunel, France/Lycée Pothier Orleans), and rookie Harvey Matou (Paris, France/Cegep de Thetford) grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

The game was a tight matchup throughout the first half, with Bishop's holding a 24-19 lead after the first quarter and Laurier holding a slim 45-44 halftime lead. The game featured 13 lead changes and eight ties overall, before the Golden Hawks pulled ahead midway through the third quarter, as they went on an 8-0 run to go ahead 64-57 and take the lead for good.

Laurier out rebounded Bishop's 43-29, including 17 offensive rebounds. The Gaiters forced 17 Laurier turnovers, with Castor-Thadal picking up three steals.
