Gaiters Squeeze by Sherbrooke in playoff nail biter

SHERBROOKE, Que – Tyler Murphy (Bromont, Que. ) converted his fourth convert of the game moments after Paul Gehrig (Palma de Mallorca, Spain/Agora Portals) knotted the score on the final play of an RSEQ University men's rugby quarter-final between Sherbrooke and Bishop's on Sunday. Murphy's boot was the last official play and sent the Coulter Field fans into hysterics as he gave the Gaiters a 33-31 victory and a ticket to the RSEQ semifinal.

How it Happened:
The Gaiters opened the scoring early in the match with a try by Marceau Bertin (Paris, France/Raffles World Academy (Dubai)) at the seven minute mark. However, Sherbrooke controlled the rest of the half despite being dealt a red card and playing a man down for almost the whole game. The Vert et Or had a very physically dominating presence in the first half led by their forwards. Sherbrooke added two tries to go into halftime with a 12-7 lead. The physical play of the Vert et Or looked like it would be the end for the Gaiters, but Bishop's did not back down. The teams went back and forth trading tries throughout the second half.  With just eight minutes to go Sherbrooke scored a go-ahead try. Sherbrooke was then dealt yet another card, this time yellow, and were forced to play the last three minutes of the game two men down. The Gaiters dug deep and fought through the strong Vert et Or defense. They turned over two Sherbrooke scrums in the dying seconds and were able to score the tying try with the clock at full time. It all came down to the conversion kick, and Murphy made no mistake hitting it right down the middle to give the Gaiters the 33-31 playoff victory.
