The Bishop's Gaiters men's basketball team had five players score in double figures, but fell 111-84 to the Alberta Golden Bears on Day 2 of the UBC Invitational in Vancouver. The Golden Bears made 17 three-pointers in the game, as they shot 56 per cent overall and 53 per cent from downtown.
For BIshop's (0-5), Joany Castor-Thadal led with 17 points, while
Yassin Naji (Lunel, France/Lycée Pothier Orleans) and rookie
Harvey Matou (Paris, France/Cegep de Thetford) each had 11 and Andrew Howard and
Kasey Paul-Buzas (Montreal, Que./) added 10 apiece.
For Alberta (2-0), Mamadou Gueye scored 23 points and had a game-high eight rebounds, while Brody Clarke had 20 points. Geoff Pippus (17 points), Andre Kelly (13), Ivan Ikomey (11) and Austin Waddoups (10) were the other Golden Bears in double figures. The Bears passed the century mark for the second straight day, after having downed Waterloo 103-74 on Day 1 of the tournament.
The Gaiters led 20-17 after the first quarter, but the Bears exploded for 35 points in the second to take a 52-38 lead at halftime. Alberta led 81-66 after three quarters and pulled away in the fourth
The Gaiters are back in action on Friday, as they travel to Ottawa for the House-Laughton Invitational at Carleton University. The Gaiters will take on the host Ravens, with the game set to tip off at 8 p.m.
