SHERBROOKE, Que. - The Gaiters men's rugby team will square off against the ETS Piranhas Friday night in RSEQ men's rugby semifinal action. Kick-off is set for 8 p.m. in Montreal.
The Records:
Bishop's is 4-3-0 after defeating the Sherbrooke Vert et Or 33-31 on Sunday afternoon in a RSEQ quarter-final contest.
Tyler Murphy (Bromont, Que. ) made four converts including the winning kick on the last play of the game to punch Bishop's ticket to the RSEQ semifinal.
ETS is 3-3-1 and finished first in their division, they therefore received the bye to the semifinals.
Last Meeting:
The Gaiters took the last contest against ETS 19-12 on Coulter Field.
Coaches Comments:
"ETS has a really technical lineout and scrum," said head coach
Charles Goode. "Their coach, who won coach of the year, will have his team well drilled and ready to go. If we don't fix our defensive, after working on it all week, we will put ourselves in a difficult situation. Our tackling needs to improve individually, but if we don't put ourselves in the right places to make those tackles as a team then it will be a tough night. Our lineout has to function well and we need to get a few minutes on the scrum machine so we can at least win our own ball. Playing away from home is never easy, we are leaving extra early and taking care of all the logistics so there is nothing left to worry about. We just have to hope that the guys come out fired up and ready to do whatever it takes to win. We have not been to a final in a few years now and it would be really great to get back there, I know we can do it, we just have to cut out the errors."
Athlete of the Week:
Marceau Bertin (Paris, France/Raffles World Academy (Dubai)) was named the Provigo, Robert Lafond Bishop's University Athlete of the Week for the week ending Oct. 29. Bertin scored early to get the Gaiters on the board first in their semifinal matchup against Sherbrooke. In the second half, he was thrust into the scrum half position following the injury to L.T. Nixon. From there Bertin was a leader for Bishop's on offense. He made a lot of crucial runs including one with no time left following a turnover on a Sherbrooke scrum that led to the game winning try.
