SHERBROOKE -
Abdul Kamane (Montreal, Que./Vanier College) scored a team-high 21 points but it was not enough to withstand the McGill offence, as the Bishop's Gaiters fell, 100-78, in RSEQ men's basketball action at the Mitchell Gym in Lennoxville, Saturday.
The third-year forward went 6-for-15 from the field and 7-for-13 from the line, as he went over the 20-point mark for the fifth straight game overall.
McGill (8-3, 3-1 RSEQ) was led by Alex Paquin, who came off the bench to score 29 points. Jenning Leung also passed the 20-point barrier, as he scored 21 points, including five three-pointers. Dele Ogundokun was the other Redmen player in double figures, with 12 points.
For Bishop's (1-11, 1-3 RSEQ), in addition to Kamane's 21,
Yassin Naji (Lunel, France/Lycée Pothier Orleans) came off the bench to score 17 points, while
Joany Castor Thadal (Saint-Leonard, Que./Champlain-St. Lambert) added 15.
Turnovers were the Gaiters' undoing, as they coughed up the ball a season-high 33 times, which Bishop's head coach
Rod Gilpin said was the difference in the game.
"They scored 46 points off our turnovers. That was everything," he said. "When you're playing against somebody who has 24 more shots than you, you don't give yourself much of an opportunity to win."
McGill went 34-for-79 (43 per cent) from the field, while the Gaiters were 24-for-55 (44 per cent).
The game was tight in the early stages, with the first quarter featuring four ties and six lead changes before the Redmen went on a 10-0 run at the end of the period to take the lead for good. Bishop's pulled back to within one point at 25-24 early in the second, but McGill put the game out of reach with a 21-2 run over the next five minutes.
The Redmen led 24-19 after one quarter, 50-33 at halftime and 80-49 after 30 minutes.
Bishop's out-rebounded McGill 45-40, with Castor-Thadal's eight leading the way for the Gaiters. Kamane and
David Belanger (Sherbrooke, Que./Champlain-St. Lambert) grabbed seven boards for Bishop's. François Bourque led McGill's rebounders with nine.
The Gaiters are back in action on Friday as they host the Laval Rouge et Or at 8 p.m. Friday's game has a special add-on for fans attending Mitchell Gym. Patrons will have the chance to get their photo taken with "Santa Gaiter." He will be present to collect non-perishable food items in benefit of families of Lennoxville Elementary School.
