MONTREAL - On a frigid Montreal Friday night Bishop's Gaiters men's rugby sophomore,
Marceau Bertin (Paris, France/Raffles World Academy (Dubai)) seemingly scored early in the second half, but it was taken away due to a knock on earlier in the play. The host ETS Piranhas took full advantage just minutes later and scored what ended up being the lone points of the night. ETS punched their ticket to the RSEQ final with a 7-0 victory.
Bishop's had the first opportunity to put points on the board but a penalty by last week's hero
Tyler Murphy (Bromont, Que. ) sailed wide right in the 27
th minute. The Gaiters again pressed in first half extra time thanks in part to a long run from
Duncan Alderdice (Hillsborough, Ont./Erin District S.S.) but Bishop's was unable to get the ball down in the try zone and the first half ended scoreless.
The Gaiters seemingly grabbed the advantage off the second half kickoff but after a conversation with his touch judge the referee indicated a knock on had occurred at the start of the play and negated the score.
The Piranhas used the momentum switch and Philippe Menard scored the lone try of the game in the 46th minute. Following the conversion the scoreboard read 7-0, the same mark it read at full time.
Bishop's did press after
Paul Gehrig (Palma de Mallorca, Spain/Agora Portals) went on a powerful run but a costly turnover ended any threat the Gaiters had to equalize.
Coach Goode's comments:
The loss ends the Gaiters 2017 campaign and is the first time the Piranhas have topped the Gaiters since they have been back in the RSEQ. ETS moves on to face the Concordia Stingers in the RSEQ final next week.
