SHERBROOKE, Que. – Carrie-Ann Auger knocked down a three-pointer with 18 seconds left to put the No. 6 Laval Rouge et Or women's basketball team up four points, and allowed them to avoid a second loss to the Bishop's Gaiters before the Christmas break . Auger added a free throw in the final seconds to make the final 57-52 in RSEQ University action on Friday night in Lennoxville.
The rare fifth game before the Christmas break was back and forth throughout the night. Both teams struggled from the field early in the game as Bishop's fired at 31 percent in the first half while Laval was just 29.7 percent.
Bishop's grabbed a 14-12 first quarter lead and maintained the two point advantage at 29-27 at the break. The Gaiters extended their lead to 45-40 after the third stanza but were only able to score seven points in the fourth while Laval put up 17 for the comeback victory.
Leading the way for the home team was captain
Mara Marchizotti (Buenos Aires, Argentina/) who chalked up a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds.
Ashley Milhomme (Repentigny, Que./Collège Montmorency) added 12 for Bishop's in the losing cause and was the only other Gaiter in double figures.
For Laval reigning RSEQ MVP Jane Gagne scored 16 points and Sarah-Jane Marois netted 14 in 39 minutes of floor time. Auger finished with eight points in just 11 minutes but was 3-4 from the floor, none bigger than the dagger triple in the last seconds of the contest.
Bishop's turned the ball over 21 times leading to 22 Laval points while Bishop's scored 16 points off 15 Rouge et Or give-aways.
Each team's biggest lead came in the fourth frame with Bishop's up by seven early on and Laval closing the game with their five-point advantage.
Laval (3-2) heads into the Christmas break a half-game out of first place, trailing McGill (3-1) and Concordia (3-1). Bishop's (2-3) finds themselves firmly in fourth in the standings, four points up on UQAM (0-4).
The Gaiters are next in action over the Christmas holidays when they host an exhibition tournament on Dec. 29 and 30. UNB, Ryerson and McGill will be in town. The regular season resumes for Bishop's on Saturday, Jan. 13
th when they host the UQAM Citadins at 6 p.m.
